Chapter 5 - The Engagement Fund

Ethan demanded the account statements.

Vanessa refused.

“This is private.”

“We’re getting married in eight weeks.”

“Exactly. You should trust me.”

“I trusted you when you said the money was untouched.”

Patricia stepped between them.

“The funds were invested.”

“In what?” Eleanor asked.

Patricia lifted her chin.

“Opportunities.”

Eleanor opened her bag.

Vanessa flinched.

Eleanor removed only a folded towel and a small sealed envelope.

The phone remained hidden beneath them.

She handed the envelope to Ethan.

Inside were transaction summaries.

Not full statements.

Enough to show repeated payments from the engagement account to Mitchell Lifestyle Consulting.

Ethan read the name twice.

“That’s your company?”

Patricia answered before Vanessa could.

“It is a family management firm.”

“It was created four months ago.”

“New businesses are created every day.”

“Why did Vanessa send it nine hundred thousand dollars?”

Patricia’s voice became colder.

“You are questioning your future wife in front of staff.”

“You sprayed my mother in front of thirty guests.”

Vanessa began crying.

This time the tears came quickly and beautifully.

“You don’t understand how much pressure your family puts on me.”

Ethan stared at her.

“What pressure?”

“Your mother judges everything I do.”

Eleanor remained silent.

Vanessa pointed toward her.

“She came here in costume to trap me.”

“You chose the hose,” Ethan said.

“I panicked.”

“You laughed.”

Vanessa’s tears stopped for half a second.

Caleb noticed.

So did Eleanor.

Patricia turned toward the guests entering the living room.

“This celebration is over.”

Eleanor stood.

“No. The transfer is scheduled for six o’clock.”

Patricia’s eyes flashed.

“What transfer?”

“The one that empties the remaining account.”

Ethan looked at the clock.

5:42 p.m.

He took out his phone.

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t.”

He looked down at her hand.

“Why?”

Her voice dropped.

“Because the money is tied to something bigger.”

Patricia closed her eyes.

Vanessa had said too much.

Ethan pulled his hand free.

“What did you do?”

Vanessa looked around the mansion.

Then toward the garden where guests still stood beneath the summer sun.

“I bought us a house.”

Ethan’s confusion deepened.

“We already chose a house.”

Vanessa swallowed.

May you like

“Not for us.”

👉 Vanessa had used Ethan’s money to purchase a property—but the name on the deed would reveal whom she had truly been planning a future with.
