Chapter 10 - The Day Nora Lost Control

Nora's trial began eight months after Daniel's poisoning.
By then, Lily was two.
Her speech had improved.
Her fear had not completely disappeared.
Daniel kept her away from court.
He refused to make his daughter relive anything for strangers.
The prosecution didn't need her testimony.
They had Mark's recovered hallway footage from another camera.
The broken teacup.
Toxicology.
Nora's prescriptions.
The hidden drawer.
The flash drive.
Emily's diary.
Brent's recordings.
Vanessa's payments.
And the video from Emily's bedroom.
Nora entered court looking composed.
Beige suit.
Hair pinned back.
No visible fear.
That lasted until Emily's video played.
Nora's jaw tightened.
Then Brent took the stand.
He admitted helping forge records.
Tracking Rosalie.
Researching the trust.
But when asked whether he knew Nora intended to kill Emily, he said:
"Not at first."
Nora shook her head.
Brent continued.
"She liked control. Money was part of it. But control was bigger."
The prosecutor asked:
"What do you mean?"
"She liked becoming necessary."
"Necessary to whom?"
"Families."
Brent looked toward Nora.
"She'd find people who were grieving, sick, overwhelmed. Then she'd make herself useful. Once everyone depended on her, she started moving pieces around."
Daniel felt cold.
That described everything.
The prosecutor asked:
"Why Daniel Carter?"
Brent answered:
"Because of Lily's trust."
"And Emily?"
"Obstacle."
Nora suddenly stood.
"Liar!"
Her attorney grabbed her arm.
The judge ordered her to sit.
Brent looked at her.
"For once, Nora, stop pretending."
She stared at him with pure hatred.
Then Vanessa testified under her own plea agreement.
She admitted giving Nora Emily's medical information.
Admitted paying her.
Admitted believing Nora would make Emily "incapacitated enough" to challenge estate decisions.
The prosecutor asked:
"Did you understand Emily could die?"
Vanessa started crying.
"I didn't want that."
"Did you stop the plan?"
"No."
"Did you warn Daniel?"
"No."
"Did you warn Emily?"
"No."
"Did you pay Nora?"
Vanessa whispered:
"Yes."
Daniel looked away.
That was all he needed.
When the prosecution played Nora's message—
**Her heart won't take another dose**—
Nora finally lost control.
She stood again.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like that!"
Silence.
Even her lawyer froze.
The prosecutor turned slowly.
"What wasn't supposed to happen?"
Nora realized what she'd done.
Too late.
Daniel stared at her.
May you like
For months she had denied everything.
Then five seconds of rage cracked the entire performance.
