Chapter 8 - The Beneficiary Nora Never Saw

Daniel's updated estate documents had one clause Nora never discovered.

If Daniel died while Lily was a minor, Rosalie would receive immediate emergency guardianship authority.

Michael would become backup guardian.

But financial control would remain with an independent corporate trustee.

No caregiver.

No partner.

No extended relative.

No emergency guardian could access the principal.

Mills almost smiled.

"So even if Nora got Lily, she still couldn't get the money."

Daniel nodded.

"Emily insisted on that structure."

Michael leaned back.

"Nora killed for money she could never control."

"She didn't know."

That was the darkest irony.

Nora had built a conspiracy around incomplete documents.

She knew enough to become dangerous.

Not enough to understand she would fail.

Vanessa didn't know either.

Brent had misread an outdated trust summary.

Their greed had outrun their knowledge.

But prosecutors still needed to prove Emily's murder beyond a reasonable doubt.

Daniel's poisoning case was strong.

Emily's was harder.

Then Brent Walsh made a deal.

Facing conspiracy and fraud charges, he agreed to cooperate.

He handed prosecutors a cloud backup Nora thought had been deleted.

Voice messages.

One was dated sixteen months earlier.

Nora:

"Emily keeps asking why her tea tastes strange."

Brent:

"Then stop."

Nora:

"We're too far in."

Brent:

"You said this was just supposed to make her sick enough that Vanessa could challenge competency."

Nora laughed.

"Plans change."

Daniel stopped the recording.

He couldn't listen.

Mills turned it off.

"There's more."

"Do I need to hear it?"

"Eventually."

Daniel looked at Lily's photo on his phone.

"Play it."

Nora's voice returned.

"If Emily dies, Daniel gets everything through Lily. Then I stay close to Daniel."

Brent cursed.

"You're insane."

"No. I'm practical."

Then the sentence that broke Daniel:

"He already trusts me."

Daniel stood and walked away.

He had.

Completely.

The recording continued.

Brent asked:

"What if Daniel remarries somebody else?"

Nora replied:

"He won't."

"How do you know?"

"Because grief makes people loyal to whoever helps them survive it."

Daniel closed his eyes.

She had studied him.

Not loved him.

Studied him.

Then another voice message surfaced.

The day before Emily died.

Nora:

"Tomorrow should be enough."

Brent:

"Enough for what?"

Nora:

"Her heart won't take another dose."

Silence filled the room.

Michael whispered:

"That's murder."

Mills nodded.

"Yes."

For the first time, Daniel knew Emily might finally receive justice.

But the recording held one more secret.

After Brent begged Nora to stop, Nora said:

"Vanessa already paid the first half."

Daniel looked up.

"Paid?"

Mills froze the audio timeline.

Vanessa hadn't simply supplied information.

She had paid Nora.

$50,000 before Emily's final hospitalization.

Another $50,000 promised afterward.

The money had come from a loan against Vanessa's house.

Daniel stared.

May you like

She knew more than she claimed.

Much more.
