Chapter 13 - Emily's Garden

Daniel couldn't change the dining room floor.

The faint stain from the spilled tea remained visible in certain light.

For months, he hated it.

Then one day Lily sat beside it with crayons.

She wasn't supposed to draw on the marble.

She did anyway.

A crooked pink flower appeared beside the stain.

Daniel stared.

Lily looked up.

"Flower."

He laughed.

Rosalie walked in.

"Are we allowing this now?"

Daniel looked at the drawing.

"Apparently."

They cleaned the crayon eventually.

But the moment stayed.

Daniel realized something.

He could spend years trying to erase every place Nora had touched.

Or he could fill those places with new memories.

So he started with the backyard.

Emily had loved roses.

Daniel planted a garden for her.

Not a memorial full of sadness.

A living garden Lily could run through.

Rosalie brought Emily's old gardening gloves.

Michael built a small bench.

Lily chose yellow flowers because she liked the color.

Daniel didn't correct her.

It became Emily's garden because Lily said so.

One afternoon, Daniel found Emily's diary again.

He read the final pages.

This time, he didn't stop at the warning.

There was another line he'd missed.

**If anything happens to me, don't let fear turn you into somebody Lily can't reach.**

Daniel sat there for a long time.

After Emily died, fear had done exactly that.

He worked more.

Controlled schedules.

Double-checked doors.

Tried to remove uncertainty.

That created the opening Nora exploited.

She made herself seem like the answer to chaos.

Daniel finally understood.

Protection wasn't control.

It was attention.

Listening.

Showing up.

Trusting discomfort.

He began therapy again.

Not because a court ordered it.

Because he wanted Lily to have a father who healed instead of merely survived.

Months passed.

Lily stopped checking every cup.

She stopped crying when Daniel left for work.

She learned a new phrase:

"Daddy comes back."

Every time she said it, Daniel felt something inside him repair.

Then one day Rosalie arrived holding a sealed envelope from Emily's estate attorney.

"Found during an archive review."

Daniel frowned.

"What is it?"

"A letter."

"For who?"

Rosalie smiled through tears.

"For Lily."

Emily had written it before her final hospitalization.

Daniel stared at the envelope.

Lily was still far too young to understand it.

He almost opened it.

Then stopped.

"No."

Rosalie looked surprised.

"You don't want to know?"

"I do."

He placed it in a safe.

"But it's hers."

May you like

That was growth too.

Not every secret needed to become his just because he was afraid.
