Chapter 10 - The Signature That Did Not Match

Travis answered on speaker.
“Mr. Calder,” a woman said. “This is Evelyn Hart, counsel for the Calder Family Trust.”
Lorraine whispered, “Hang up.”
Travis ignored her.
Evelyn continued.
“We received an urgent submission this morning contesting your son’s eligibility.”
Brooke closed her eyes.
Lorraine had moved faster than they realized.
“What was submitted?” Travis asked.
“A preliminary DNA report and a sworn statement alleging your wife admitted the child may not be yours.”
“That statement is false.”
“We suspected that.”
Lorraine’s head lifted.
“Why?” Travis asked.
“Because the signature on the affidavit does not match the trustee signature in our archived records.”
Lorraine went pale.
Travis stared at her.
“Whose signature was used?”
“Lorraine Calder’s.”
“That is my mother.”
“I understand. But the original trustee signature on file belongs to another person.”
Silence.
Evelyn spoke more carefully.
“Mr. Calder, according to the trust documents, Lorraine Calder was never appointed sole trustee.”
Travis’s grip tightened around the phone.
“Who was?”
“Your father appointed two co-trustees. Lorraine Calder and his business partner, Samuel Reid.”
Lorraine whispered, “Samuel is dead.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “Mr. Reid is alive.”
Lorraine’s eyes widened.
“He has been living abroad for twelve years. He contacted us last month after receiving notice of the pending transfer.”
Travis looked at his mother.
“You told me he died.”
Lorraine backed toward the nursery.
Evelyn continued.
“Mr. Reid also claims he never approved any distributions from the trust.”
Brooke understood.
If Samuel had not approved them, Lorraine’s withdrawals were unauthorized.
Years of spending.
Houses.
Jewelry.
Investments.
All of it could be theft.
Travis asked the question no one wanted to answer.
“How much is missing?”
Evelyn paused.
“Preliminary review suggests more than eleven million dollars.”
Lorraine turned and ran.
Not toward the front door.
Toward the nursery.
Toward the crib.
Travis handed Jonah to Brooke and followed.
Lorraine reached beneath the mattress.
Her fingers closed around a white envelope.
Brooke gasped.
She had seen that envelope before.
May you like
Lorraine had hidden it the night she arrived.
👉 The envelope beneath Jonah’s mattress contained the document Lorraine feared more than the recording, the DNA scheme, or the missing millions.
