Chapter 11 - The Envelope Beneath the Mattress

Lorraine tore open the envelope.
Travis caught her wrist before she could rip the papers inside.
“Let go of me!”
“Drop it.”
“You have no right.”
“It was hidden under my son’s mattress.”
Lorraine twisted away.
The envelope fell.
Papers slid across the carpet.
Brooke recognized the letterhead from the trust attorney.
One document was dated six weeks earlier.
Before Jonah was born.
Travis picked it up.
It was a notice informing Lorraine that Samuel Reid had returned and requested a full audit.
A second document contained a deadline.
Lorraine had ten business days to provide records supporting every trust withdrawal.
The deadline was Monday.
Three days away.
Brooke looked at her.
“You needed Jonah declared ineligible before the audit.”
Lorraine said nothing.
Travis read the final page.
If Jonah qualified as his biological child, control transferred immediately to Travis.
He would receive unrestricted access to all historical records.
Every transfer.
Every falsified approval.
Every missing dollar.
Lorraine’s plan became clear.
She would plant false DNA on Jonah’s blanket.
She would provoke Brooke while secretly recording her.
She would present Brooke as unstable and unfaithful.
Then she would challenge Jonah’s paternity, delay the trust transfer, and use the extra time to move or replace records.
“You hurt Brooke for paperwork,” Travis said.
Lorraine’s face hardened.
“I built your life.”
“No. You controlled it.”
“I gave you everything.”
“You gave me lies.”
“You would be nothing without me.”
Travis looked around the nursery.
At his injured wife.
At his newborn son.
At the woman who had tried to destroy both.
“I became everything in spite of you.”
Lorraine slapped him.
The sound cracked through the room.
Brooke gasped.
Travis did not move.
Lorraine seemed shocked by her own action.
He slowly turned his face back toward her.
“That was the last time you touch anyone in my family.”
Police sirens sounded faintly outside.
Lorraine looked toward the window.
“You called them?”
Brooke raised her phone.
While Lorraine had been fighting Travis, Brooke had recovered it from the unlocked linen closet.
May you like
“No,” Brooke said. “I did.”
👉 Lorraine believed she could still explain everything away, but the responding officer recognized her name from another report filed years earlier.
