Chapter 13 - Samuel Reid’s Confession

Samuel Reid arrived in Phoenix the next morning.

He was seventy-two, thin, silver-haired, and carried a weathered leather case.

Travis met him in the hospital family room while Brooke slept.

Samuel looked at Jonah first.

Then he began to cry.

“He has Richard’s eyes.”

Travis did not respond.

“Tell me what happened to my father.”

Samuel sat down slowly.

“Your father discovered Lorraine had been taking money from the trust.”

“How?”

“She forged my approval. At first, the amounts were small. Then larger.”

“Why didn’t you stop her?”

“I tried.”

Samuel opened the leather case.

Inside were copies of old bank records, letters, and a cassette tape.

“Richard planned to remove her as trustee. He also planned to leave her.”

Travis stared at the tape.

“The night before he disappeared, he recorded a conversation.”

Samuel placed the tape recorder on the table.

Richard’s voice filled the room.

“You have taken enough.”

Lorraine answered.

“You would destroy your own family over numbers?”

“I am protecting Travis.”

“You are taking him from me.”

“You did that yourself.”

Then Lorraine’s voice became low.

“If you leave, he will hate you.”

Richard said, “Not after he reads the letters.”

The recording ended with a door slamming.

Samuel looked at Travis.

“Your father gave me the tape and copies of the letters. He planned to meet federal investigators the next day.”

“But he never arrived.”

“No.”

“Did my mother kill him?”

Samuel’s eyes filled with pain.

“I do not know.”

Travis looked away.

Samuel continued.

“I left the country because Lorraine threatened my family. I was a coward.”

“You came back.”

“Too late.”

“No,” Travis said. “Not too late.”

Mara entered with new information.

Airport records showed Richard Calder had boarded a flight under another name.

He had survived.

He had lived for eleven more years.

He had died in a hospice facility in Oregon.

And he had left one sealed package addressed to Travis.

Lorraine had intercepted every attempt to deliver it.

Mara placed the package on the table.

Travis’s hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was a letter from his father.

The first line broke him.

Son, I did not abandon you.

👉 Richard’s final letter revealed why he stayed away—and why Lorraine had feared Travis becoming a father more than anything else.
