Chapter 12 - The Woman from the Old Report

Two officers entered the nursery.

One was young.

The other, Detective Mara Collins, was in her late forties with calm eyes and a gray streak in her dark hair.

When Travis said Lorraine’s full name, Mara stopped.

“Lorraine Calder?”

Lorraine straightened.

“Yes.”

Mara studied her face.

Then she looked at Travis.

“Was your father Richard Calder?”

Travis nodded.

Mara exhaled slowly.

“I handled a welfare complaint involving him fifteen years ago.”

Lorraine’s confidence cracked.

“That complaint was dismissed.”

“It was closed because Mr. Calder disappeared before we could interview him.”

“My husband left the country.”

“No,” Mara said. “His car was found at the airport. He was not.”

Travis stared at her.

“My father died overseas.”

“That is what your mother reported.”

Lorraine raised her voice.

“This has nothing to do with today.”

Mara crouched beside the papers on the carpet.

“It may have everything to do with today.”

She asked Travis for permission to secure the recorder, the footage, the prescription bottle, and the trust documents.

Then she turned to Brooke.

“Did Lorraine give you anything to eat or drink this morning?”

Brooke thought.

“Tea.”

Lorraine said quickly, “She always drinks tea.”

Mara looked at her.

“I did not ask you.”

Brooke remembered the bitter taste.

She had taken only two sips.

Then nausea hit.

Weakness.

Dizziness.

The pills missing from her prescription bag.

Mara called for paramedics.

At the hospital, blood tests found a sedative in Brooke’s system.

Not enough to kill her.

Enough to make her confused, weak, and unsteady.

Enough to support Lorraine’s story that Brooke was impaired.

The missing pills were found inside Lorraine’s jacket pocket.

Lorraine was arrested for assault, evidence tampering, and child endangerment.

As officers led her away, she looked at Travis.

“I am still your mother.”

Travis held Jonah against his chest.

“No,” he said. “You are the woman who tried to erase my family.”

Lorraine’s face twisted.

Then she shouted one final sentence.

“Ask Samuel what your father discovered!”

Travis went still.

Mara turned toward him.

Whatever Richard Calder discovered had frightened Lorraine enough to hide letters, money, and the truth for fifteen years.

👉 The mystery was no longer only about the trust—because Samuel Reid was finally ready to explain what happened to Travis’s father.
