Chapter 14 - The Truth His Father Left Behind

Travis read the letter beside Brooke’s hospital bed.
She held his hand while Jonah slept between them in the bassinet.
Richard explained everything.
After confronting Lorraine, he learned she had prepared false evidence accusing him of financial crimes.
She threatened to have him arrested.
She threatened to tell Travis that he was violent.
She threatened to destroy Samuel’s family.
Richard fled because he believed Lorraine would use Travis as leverage.
He spent years trying to clear his name.
By the time investigators confirmed the forged records, Richard was ill.
He wrote dozens of letters.
Lorraine intercepted them.
But the final pages contained something else.
A warning.
Lorraine’s greatest fear was not losing money.
It was losing ownership of Travis.
Richard wrote:
Your mother does not love people freely. She loves them when they need her. The day you build a family that does not depend on her, she will see that family as an enemy.
Brooke closed her eyes.
Every insult.
Every accusation.
Every attempt to make her appear weak.
Lorraine had not merely wanted the trust.
She wanted Travis alone.
Dependent.
Grateful.
Controlled.
Jonah’s birth threatened everything.
The trust would transfer.
Travis would learn the truth.
Brooke would become the center of his family.
So Lorraine decided to destroy Brooke’s credibility, question Jonah’s paternity, and reclaim Travis through crisis.
“She wanted you to believe you had no one but her,” Brooke whispered.
Travis looked at his wife.
“You tried to warn me.”
“I should have told you sooner.”
“No. I should have seen it sooner.”
Brooke shook her head.
“She trained you not to question her.”
Travis pressed his forehead to Brooke’s hand.
“I am so sorry.”
Brooke’s eyes filled with tears.
“You came home.”
Those three words nearly broke him.
The trust audit moved quickly after Lorraine’s arrest.
Bank records confirmed years of unauthorized transfers.
Forged signatures.
Hidden properties.
Shell accounts.
The district attorney added fraud, conspiracy, theft, and witness intimidation charges.
Then the false DNA report led investigators to the man whose voice was on the recorder.
He was not a doctor.
He was Lorraine’s private investigator.

And he agreed to testify.
👉 With every lie exposed, Lorraine prepared one final attack in court—but Brooke was no longer the frightened woman crawling across the nursery floor.
