Chapter 1 - The Nursery Door

The nursery door slammed into the wall so hard the framed photographs shook.
“Put him down.”
Travis Calder stood in the doorway, one hand locked around the frame, his chest rising beneath his navy suit.
For one frozen second, he could not understand what he was seeing.
His wife, Brooke, was on her hands and knees on the beige carpet.
Her long blonde hair hung over her face. Her cream robe had fallen open at one shoulder. One hand pressed against her lower abdomen while the other trembled beneath her weight.
She had given birth fourteen days earlier.
She was supposed to be resting.
Instead, she was crawling.
Across the room, Travis’s mother stood beside the crib, holding newborn Jonah against her pink jacket.
Lorraine Calder looked immaculate.
Pearls.
Pressed skirt suit.
Perfect hair.
No panic.
No shame.
She pointed down at Brooke as if she were pointing at dirt on the carpet.
“Your wife is useless,” Lorraine said.
Brooke flinched.
Travis crossed the room in two hard strides.
He lowered himself beside Brooke and placed a careful hand on her shoulder.
“Did you fall?”
Brooke’s lips moved, but no sound came out at first.
Her face was ghost-white.
Then she whispered, “The crib.”
Her eyes were not on Jonah.
They were fixed on the pale-blue blanket folded inside the white crib.
One corner was slightly raised.
Lorraine noticed Travis looking.
For the first time, something cracked in her expression.
She stepped backward.
“What are you staring at?” she snapped.
Then, still holding Jonah securely with one arm, she slid her free hand beneath the blanket.
Her fingers closed around something small.
Travis watched her hide it inside her fist.
“Open your hand,” he said.
Lorraine’s eyes darted toward the camera mounted near the ceiling.
That glance lasted less than a second.
But Travis saw it.
So did Brooke.
The baby stopped crying.
The room went silent.
Lorraine slowly loosened one finger.
A thin metallic edge flashed between her knuckles.
Then she closed her fist again.
Travis rose to his full height.
His voice became quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
“What did you put in my son’s crib?”
Lorraine smiled.
May you like
But her hand was shaking.
👉 Travis had come home early because Brooke stopped answering her phone—but the reason she had been unable to call him was even worse than what he saw on the floor.
