Chapter 9 - The Trust His Father Left

Travis’s father had not died poor.

That was the story Lorraine told everyone.

“He wasted everything,” she had said.

“He left debts.”

Travis believed her.

He built his own company from nothing.

He never asked for an inheritance.

Now Lorraine stood in his office, staring at him with the same expression she wore whenever she was deciding which truth he deserved.

“What trust?” he asked.

Lorraine lifted her chin.

“Your father was sentimental.”

“That is not an answer.”

“He created a family trust before he died.”

Brooke watched Travis carefully.

He did not shout.

His calmness was worse.

“How much?”

Lorraine looked away.

“How much, Mom?”

“Forty-two million dollars.”

Brooke stopped breathing.

Travis’s face remained still, but his eyes changed.

“And you controlled it.”

“As trustee.”

“For how long?”

“Until you turned forty.”

Travis was thirty-nine.

His birthday was seven months away.

Lorraine continued.

“But there were conditions.”

“What conditions?”

“If you had a biological child before forty, control transferred immediately to you and your child.”

Brooke understood first.

“Jonah activated the trust.”

Lorraine’s silence confirmed it.

Travis looked down at his son.

Then back at his mother.

“You planted another man’s DNA so the trustees would challenge Jonah’s paternity.”

Lorraine’s voice cracked.

“I was protecting what your father built.”

“You mean what you stole.”

“I managed it.”

“For twenty years.”

“I made sacrifices.”

“You hid my father’s letters. You hid his money. Now you tried to erase my son.”

Lorraine pointed at Brooke.

“She would have taken everything.”

Brooke’s exhaustion hardened into anger.

“I did not know it existed.”

Lorraine laughed.

“That is what women like you always say.”

Travis stepped closer.

“Women like her?”

“Women who see a lonely man with money.”

“I had no money when she met me.”

Lorraine’s mouth tightened.

That was the flaw in her story.

Brooke had met Travis before his company succeeded.

She had paid half the rent.

She had worked nights.

She had sold her car to help cover payroll during his first failed expansion.

Lorraine knew all of it.

This was never about protecting Travis.

It was about control.

Then Travis’s phone rang.

The caller ID showed the trust attorney’s office.

Lorraine’s face collapsed.

She had been expecting that call.

👉 Lorraine’s plan had already reached the attorney—but the forged evidence she submitted carried one mistake that could expose years of theft.
