Chapter 1 - The Girl in the Rain

“Please… it hurts so much!”
Six-year-old Lily Carter’s scream disappeared beneath the thunder.
Rain poured through her hair and soaked the pale pink dress clinging to her small body.
Her wrists were tied to the trunk of the old oak tree in our backyard.
Claire stood in front of her.
My wife.
Lily’s stepmother.
A length of wet rope hung from her hand.
“You should’ve listened the first time,” Claire said.
Then she swung it again.
The rope struck Lily across the shoulder.
Lily cried out.
On the other side of the wooden fence, our neighbor Mark Evans froze.
He had stepped outside because he heard screaming.
What he saw made him grab his phone.
He pushed the camera toward a gap between the fence boards.
Claire never noticed.
“You’re going to learn,” she told Lily.
Mark started recording.
Then he called me.
I was eight miles away at Carter Construction, sitting through a budget meeting.
My phone vibrated.
Mark’s name appeared.
I nearly ignored it.
Then I saw his message.
WATCH THIS NOW.
The video opened.
For one second, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
Then Lily lifted her face.
My daughter.
Tied to a tree.
Crying in the rain.
Claire stood over her.
I shot out of my chair so violently it crashed backward.
One of my managers yelled my name.
I didn’t answer.
I was already running.
Back at the house, Claire stepped closer to Lily.
“No one is coming to save you.”
She was wrong.
Mark kicked through a loose fence plank and rushed into the yard.
“What are you doing?!”
Claire spun around.
Her face changed when she saw the phone in his hand.
Not shame.
Fear.
Then her eyes dropped toward the patio doors.
And Mark noticed something strange.
A small black folder sat just inside the house.
Claire abandoned Lily and ran straight toward it.
Not toward safety.
Not toward her phone.
Toward the folder.
Mark moved in front of her.
“Stay away from that child.”
Claire screamed, “This is none of your business!”
“It became my business when you tied a six-year-old to a tree.”
Then Mark looked at the folder again.
Claire followed his eyes.

And suddenly she looked more frightened of those papers than of the video he had just recorded.
👉 Whatever Claire had been doing to Lily, the rope wasn’t the only thing she desperately wanted to hide.
