Chapter 11 - Peter Told the Truth
Peter testified because prosecutors had him cornered on financial charges.
At first, he minimized everything.
Then Claire glared at him from the defense table.
Something changed.
Maybe fear.
Maybe resentment.
Maybe he finally realized his sister would let him take the fall.
He looked at the prosecutor.
“She wanted Daniel scared of Lily.”
The courtroom went silent.
“What does that mean?”
Peter swallowed.
“Claire said if Lily started acting unstable, Daniel might send her away for treatment.”
My stomach turned.
Peter continued.
“She talked about making Lily look violent. Disobedient. Mentally disturbed.”
That explained things I hadn’t understood.
Broken objects Claire blamed on Lily.
A kitchen drawer Claire claimed Lily emptied.
A school note alleging Lily had lied repeatedly.
I had believed some of it.
Not all.
Enough.
Peter said Claire wanted to build a record.
If I died, she could argue Rebecca was unfit and Lily needed “specialized care.”
If I lived but the marriage collapsed, she wanted me to believe Lily was the source of the conflict.
“She said Daniel would eventually get tired.”
I stared at Claire.
She looked back at me without remorse.
Peter’s voice shook.
“Then Lily found the box.”
“And what did Claire tell you?”
“She said the kid had taken a letter.”
“What did she plan to do?”
“I don’t know exactly.”
The prosecutor waited.
Peter broke.
“She said, ‘By tonight she’ll be too scared to talk.’”
Claire shouted:
“LIAR!”
The judge ordered her to sit.
Peter began crying.
“I told her not to hurt the girl.”
The prosecutor displayed Claire’s reply.
You worry too much.
Children forget when adults tell the story better.
That sentence destroyed her.
Not legally by itself.
Emotionally.
Every juror heard what she believed.
That Lily’s voice could be overwritten.
That adults had more power than children.
But Claire had forgotten Mark.
She had forgotten cameras.
She had forgotten my mother’s letters.
Most of all, she had underestimated Lily.
My daughter hadn’t forgotten.
She had hidden evidence.
She had told the truth.
