Chapter 10 - The Letter Lily Saved

I asked Lily gently.

“Who did you give Grandma’s letter to?”

She hesitated.

Then pointed toward the house next door.

“Mr. Mark.”

Mark looked stunned.

“What?”

Lily explained.

Three days before the storm, she saw Claire searching the blue box.

She took one envelope because her name was written on it.

Then, when Claire began questioning her, Lily became scared.

The next afternoon, she slipped it through a gap in Mark’s fence.

She didn’t tell him.

Mark searched his garage.

Behind a stack of gardening magazines sat a wrinkled envelope.

He had assumed it was junk mail blown through the fence.

The front said:

For Lily—or whoever protects her when Daniel cannot.

My mother’s handwriting.

I opened it.

Inside was a notarized statement.

My mother wrote that before my wedding she had confronted Claire about lying regarding her finances.

Claire responded with a threat:

If you keep digging into my life, you’ll lose access to Daniel and Lily.

My mother documented the conversation.

Then she wrote:

Daniel may not believe me now. I hope he never needs to.

I sat down.

She had been right.

I hadn’t believed her.

Years earlier, my mother had tried to tell me she distrusted Claire.

I accused her of being controlling.

We argued.

She stopped pushing.

Then she quietly protected Lily through the trust.

I covered my face.

“I failed both of them.”

Mark sat beside me.

“You trusted your wife.”

“I ignored warnings.”

“Then don’t ignore what you know now.”

He was right.

The letter strengthened the prosecution’s evidence of Claire’s longstanding financial fixation and hostility toward anyone challenging her story.

But it did something else for me.

It ended the fantasy that our marriage had merely “gone bad.”

Claire had built it on deception from the beginning.

At the next hearing, she saw the letter.

Her composure finally cracked.

“That woman hated me!”

The prosecutor said calmly:

“Margaret Carter has been dead for four years.”

Claire pointed at me.

“He always chose them over me!”

“His mother?”

“His daughter! His stupid family! That company!”

The judge warned her.

Claire kept going.

“I gave him everything!”

I stood absolutely still.

Because suddenly I understood her.

Claire had never wanted to join my family.

She had wanted to possess it.

And Lily had always been the one person she couldn’t remove from the center.

👉 Claire’s mask had finally slipped in court—but her own brother was about to reveal the secret plan she had never written down.
