Chapter 14 - The First Storm After Claire

The first major storm came that spring.
Thunder shook the windows.
Rain slammed against the patio doors.
I found Lily standing in the hallway.
She was staring at the backyard.
At the oak tree.
I walked beside her.
“We can close the curtains.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“You sure?”
She nodded.
For several minutes, we just watched the rain.
Then Lily said:
“I hate that tree.”
My chest tightened.
“We can cut it down.”
She thought about it.
“No.”
That surprised me.
“Why not?”
“Trees don’t do bad things.”
I swallowed hard.
“No. They don’t.”
“Claire did.”
“Yes.”
Lily took my hand.
“Can we put something nice there?”
The following weekend, Mark helped us build a small garden around the oak.
Lily chose daisies.
Purple salvia.
Two rosebushes.
She hung a tiny wooden birdhouse from one branch.
Rebecca came over with lunch.
For the first time since everything happened, our backyard sounded like a backyard again.
Music.
Talking.
Lily laughing.
At one point, she wrapped a ribbon loosely around the tree trunk.
I immediately stiffened.
She noticed.
“It’s okay, Daddy.”
Then she tied a bow.
Pink.
Soft.
Easy to untie.
I turned away for a second because my eyes burned.
Later, Mark leaned against the repaired fence.
“You okay?”
“Getting there.”
He nodded toward Lily.
“She’s tougher than all of us.”
“She shouldn’t have needed to be.”
“No.”
That distinction mattered.
I didn’t want people praising Lily for surviving as if suffering had been some gift.
She deserved a childhood that never required that kind of strength.
So that became my job.
Not making her “stronger.”
Making her safer.
Then Rebecca walked over with paperwork.
The trust had officially been updated with an independent corporate trustee.
No spouse of mine could ever control Lily’s inheritance.
No future relationship would change it.
My mother’s warning had become permanent protection.
I signed the last page.
Lily ran toward me.
“Come see!”
She pointed to the birdhouse.
A small robin had landed on it.

The storm clouds were already breaking.
👉 The backyard no longer belonged to Claire’s worst moment—but one final anniversary would prove that Lily had taken it back completely.
