Chapter 9 - The Meeting That Never Existed

The fake meeting was the turning point.
Investigators reconstructed Claire’s day.
8:12 a.m.—she logged into my company calendar from home.
8:17 a.m.—she created a fake executive review scheduled from 4:30 to 9 p.m.
9:03 a.m.—she searched weather forecasts.
Heavy storms were expected after 4.
11:46 a.m.—she moved the blue box from her closet to the home office.
3:51 p.m.—Lily returned from school.
4:08 p.m.—our indoor camera captured Claire carrying rope toward the patio.
4:16 p.m.—Mark heard Lily scream.
There was no spontaneous tantrum.
There was preparation.
Claire’s attorney changed tactics.
Now they blamed stress.
Financial anxiety.
Marital insecurity.
A momentary breakdown.
Then prosecutors recovered messages between Claire and Peter.
One was sent the night before.
Tomorrow I’ll finally find out what she knows.
Peter replied:
Don’t do anything stupid.
Claire:
I’m done letting a child control my future.
That message erased “momentary.”
I sat in Rachel’s office staring at it.
“Was she going to kill Lily?”
Rachel chose her words carefully.
“We may never know exactly how far she intended to go. What we can prove is already serious.”
Part of me wanted the darkest answer.
Because anger likes certainty.
But Lily didn’t need me obsessed with a theory.
She needed a father present in the life she still had.
So I stopped asking what Claire might have done.
I focused on what she had done.
And what we could prove.
Then Mark came to our house.
He looked uncomfortable.
“I should’ve told you this earlier.”
“What?”
“Claire approached me two weeks before the storm.”
My skin prickled.
“She asked whether my backyard camera covered your fence.”
“Why?”
“She said someone had been trespassing.”
“Did you tell her?”
“I told her my camera was broken.”
Claire thought no camera could see the yard.
That explained why she chose the tree near Mark’s fence.
But Mark smiled faintly.
“My fixed camera came back online the morning it happened.”
There was more footage.
Not just the phone video.
His security camera had captured the backyard continuously from 4:02 p.m.
Including the moment Claire brought Lily outside.
Including what she said before tying the first knot.
The detective played the audio.
Claire’s voice was clear.
“Tell me where you hid the letter, and I’ll untie you.”
Lily answered:
“I gave it to someone.”
Claire froze on screen.
“So that’s why,” I whispered.
Lily hadn’t merely threatened to tell me.

She had already moved evidence.
👉 Claire’s entire attack had been triggered by one missing letter—and only Lily knew who had it.
