Chapter 5 - My Mother’s Warning

The investigator was retired.

His name was Thomas Reed.

He remembered my mother immediately.

“Margaret Carter didn’t trust your fiancée.”

I gripped the phone.

“Why?”

“She thought Claire was lying about her finances.”

He sent Rachel copies of his archived report.

Claire had told me she came from a wealthy family in Connecticut.

That wasn’t true.

Her parents had modest incomes.

She told me she owned an apartment before we met.

It belonged to a former boyfriend.

She claimed she had never been married.

That was technically true.

But she had been engaged twice.

Both men were wealthy.

Both relationships ended after money disputes.

One former fiancé had accused her of forging his signature on a loan application.

Charges were never filed.

Then Thomas said something that made the room go silent.

“Your mother asked me to investigate one more thing.”

“What?”

“Whether Claire had ever harmed a child.”

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Why would she ask that?”

“Because she saw Claire grab Lily once.”

Lily had been two.

My mother witnessed Claire squeeze her arm hard enough to make her cry.

When confronted, Claire claimed Lily was about to touch a hot stove.

My mother never believed her.

Neither did Thomas.

But there hadn’t been enough evidence.

So my mother created another layer of protection in Lily’s trust.

A guardian provision.

If I died, Claire would not automatically control Lily’s money.

My sister Rebecca would.

Claire had recently discovered that clause.

Now everything made sense.

The folder.

The searches.

The blue box.

Her rage at Lily.

Claire didn’t just resent my daughter.

She had realized Lily’s existence blocked her from controlling millions.

Then Mark called.

“Daniel, I found something else on my video.”

“What?”

“I zoomed in on Claire before I kicked the fence.”

He sent me a still image.

Claire had been holding the rope in one hand.

In the other was a small white pill bottle.

My heart stopped.

I recognized the label style.

It came from Lily’s allergy medication cabinet.

But Lily wasn’t supposed to take anything that afternoon.

Police checked the patio.

They found the bottle behind the tree.

It didn’t contain Lily’s allergy medicine.

It contained prescription sleeping pills issued to Claire.

The detective looked at me.

“Why would she bring sedatives into the yard?”

I had no answer.

But Claire did.

And she was about to be forced to give it.

👉 The rope had been horrifying enough—but the pill bottle suggested Mark may have interrupted something far worse.
