Chapter 6

PART 6:

The first exhibit was a hospital report from March 14.

Bruised ribs.

Sprained wrist.

Contusions on the upper arm.

Julian had told the doctor Iris slipped on the stairs.

The second exhibit was a corporate transfer signed the next morning.

The third was a voicemail Julian had left two hours before the signing.

Rebecca played it.

Julian’s voice filled the courtroom.

“You will sign what I put in front of you, Iris. Or next time, I won’t stop at your ribs.”

The mistress lowered her head.

Julian went still.

The reporters stopped typing for one stunned second.

Then Rebecca placed another document on the table.

“This is a forensic accounting report,” she said. “It shows company assets moved into three shell entities controlled by Mr. Cross and his romantic partner during the marriage.”

The mistress looked up fast.

Julian shot her a warning glance.

Too late.

The judge saw it.

Rebecca continued.

“The same partner helped prepare public statements describing my client as unstable while Mr. Cross removed her from the company she founded.”

Julian finally stood.

“This is a divorce hearing,” he barked. “Not a criminal trial.”

The judge’s voice cut through him.

“You are correct, Mr. Cross. Which is why I am stopping this proceeding and referring the evidence to the district attorney.”

The courtroom went silent again.

This time, the silence belonged to Julian.

The judge ordered the company assets frozen immediately.

The house could not be sold.

The bank accounts could not be drained.

The holding companies were placed under emergency review.
