Chapter 9

PART 9:
One year after the hearing, Iris walked into the same courthouse to finalize the last piece of her divorce.
This time, she did not wear gray.
She wore white.
Not bridal white.
Not innocent white.
A clean, sharp white suit that made the reporters turn their heads.
Julian was not there.
He was in prison.
His attorney appeared by video.
The judge signed the final order.
The marriage was over.
The stolen assets had been returned.
The lies had been recorded in the only place Julian could not rewrite them.
A court record.
Outside, Rebecca asked if Iris wanted to make a statement.
Iris looked at the cameras.
For a moment, she thought of every person who had stared at her scars in that courtroom.
Then she thought of the woman she had been, standing alone while Julian told her she would leave with nothing.
She stepped forward.
“I did lose things,” Iris said. “I lost years. I lost peace. I lost trust in people who should have helped me.”
The reporters waited.
Iris lifted her chin.
“But I did not lose myself.”
Then she walked down the courthouse steps into the sunlight.
No coat hiding her arms.
No lowered eyes.
No Julian beside her.
For years, he had called her scars proof that she was weak.
He was wrong.
They were proof she survived every version of him.

And in the end, those “signatures” became the evidence that took everything from him.
💬 What was the strongest moment — Iris showing the scars Julian left, or the judge realizing this was no longer just a divorce case?
