Chapter 16 - THE NANNY’S AUDIO
Emma had one recording.
She almost deleted it.
Weeks before she was fired, she left her phone recording in the kitchen because she feared Beatriz would accuse her of something.
The audio lasted twenty-seven minutes.
Most was ordinary.
Cabinets.
Footsteps.
Isabella babbling.
Then Beatriz entered.
Emma:
“She needs her lunch.”
Beatriz:
“She threw food.”
Emma:
“She’s two.”
Beatriz:
“Stop saying that like it excuses everything.”
Emma:
“It explains everything.”
Silence.
Then:
“I’m calling Adrian.”
Beatriz laughed.
“He won’t answer.”
“I’ll keep calling.”
“You’ll be unemployed before he calls back.”
Emma:
“Then fire me.”
Beatriz:
“I can do more than fire you.”
The next section mattered.
Beatriz:
“If Adrian hears Isabella is difficult from enough people, he’ll believe it.”
Emma:
“She isn’t difficult.”
Beatriz:
“He already thinks she is when she cries about Elena.”
My chest tightened.
Had I said that?
I searched messages.
Months earlier:
Beatriz: Isabella won’t stop crying for Elena tonight.
Me: She gets difficult when she’s overtired. Try the music.
One careless adjective.
Difficult.
Beatriz stored it.
Expanded it.
Built a narrative.
Then Emma said:
“You’re trying to make him think his own child is the problem.”
Beatriz:
“I’m trying to make this family manageable.”
Emma:
“By hurting her?”
Chair scrape.

The recording ended twelve minutes later.
No confession to financial fraud.
No admission of confinement.
But it corroborated strategy.
Then Emma described the day she was fired.
A diamond bracelet appeared inside her tote bag.
She swore she never touched it.
Police were never called.
Why?
Because Beatriz did not want an investigation.
She wanted Emma gone.
The bracelet later reappeared in Beatriz’s jewelry inventory.

That was new.
Beatriz had staged theft.
Emma’s confidentiality agreement had been built on a false accusation.

“Can we prove Beatriz put it in the bag?”
“No.”

No direct proof.
So we did not claim more.
What we could prove:
Beatriz falsely represented the bracelet as missing after it remained in her possession.
Used the allegation to remove a nanny who challenged her.
That was enough to change Emma from “disgruntled former employee” into a witness with corroboration.
Then Beatriz’s counterattack intensified.
She released photographs of Emma accepting a large severance payment.
Her lawyer called the recording extortion-related.
Emma had demanded money to stay silent, they claimed.
The agreement showed otherwise.
Beatriz offered severance first.
Another selective narrative weakened.
Then Dr. Park gave the court an interim report.
Isabella displayed anxiety linked specifically to Beatriz and the cellar environment.
She did not show generalized fear of me.
She did not display evidence supporting Beatriz’s claims of persistent fabrication.
That did not prove every statement true.
It destroyed the broad “lying toddler” defense.
Then the court asked whether supervised contact should begin.
Isabella heard Beatriz’s name during the therapist’s neutral assessment.
She crawled beneath the table.
The recommendation was no.
For now.
