Chapter 10 - THE SECOND BALCONY

The Boston hotel reservation had been made under my name.
A penthouse suite contained a dining room connected to a balcony.
Pink pajamas waited on a child’s bed.
Stale bread sat inside a sealed container.
Cameras covered every angle.
Continuity Partners planned to create footage showing me locking Emma outside.
If the recording looked authentic, Olivia could argue the original dinner video showed a normal family practice I later repeated.
The operation did not require actual harm if a convincing substitute played me.
Claire had been assigned the role.
She admitted Olivia trained her for it before the arrests.
“Were you going to do it?”
“I thought the child would be an actor.”
“And if it was Emma?”
Claire looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Honesty again.
The staged hotel demonstrated the next evolution.
When real events became dangerous, the network manufactured alternatives.
Evidence no longer needed to be erased if enough conflicting versions existed.
Eleanor Ashbourne specialized in doubt.
The federal team preserved the suite and arrested three staff members.
One was a child actor’s mother who believed the production was a private film.
Another knew it was blackmail.
The third was an abuse survivor coerced through debt.
Different levels of responsibility.
The law separated them.
Then Eleanor released a video online showing “me” on the hotel balcony yelling at a child.
Claire recognized herself.
The footage had been recorded months earlier using a doll from a distance, then digitally altered.
Public opinion split again.
Some believed I had staged the original apartment incident to seize marital assets.
My company stock fell.
Board members panicked.
I refused to step down.
Instead, we released a forensic timeline, original metadata, hotel construction records, and Claire’s sworn statement—with her consent.
Truth moved slowly but accumulated weight.
The false video lost credibility.
Continuity Partners lost investors.
Then Emma’s fourth birthday approached.
I did not cancel every celebration out of fear.
We held a small party in a secure garden with people she chose.
No balcony.
No cameras except family photos she understood.
Emma received a toy kitchen.
She placed a plastic roll on a plate and told her dolls, “Everyone eats inside.”
I had to leave the room for a minute to cry.
Healing appeared through play before language.
Daniel sent a birthday card through the court.
Emma did not want it read.
We respected that.
Emily attended with her advocate.
The sisters played without understanding the legal history connecting them.
Grace remained elsewhere.
No forced family tableau.
Then Detective Hayes arrived during the party with urgent news.
Eleanor Ashbourne had been arrested at the Canadian border.
She carried a current photograph of Emma asleep.
Taken inside our secure residence the previous night.
Someone close to me still worked for the network.
The photograph’s angle came from the doorway.
Only three adults had entered.
My driver.
May you like
Rebecca.
My mother.
