Chapter 7 - THE SECOND DINNER

The luxury apartment remained sealed as a crime scene.

Olivia had regained access through a hidden service elevator known only to Richard and Michael.

She arranged the dining table exactly as before.

Lobster.

Oysters.

Wine.

Stale bread on a small plate beside the balcony door.

Daniel sat tied to a chair.

Olivia demanded Helen enter alone.

My mother refused to let me take her place.

I refused to let her decide alone.

We coordinated with federal agents and entered together under surveillance.

Emma remained far away with her advocate.

No child would be bait.

Olivia appeared at the head of the table wearing cream silk.

She looked at Helen.

“You always were sentimental.”

Helen answered, “You always confused cruelty with discipline.”

Daniel begged his mother to stop.

Olivia ignored him.

She wanted the microdrive containing Richard’s offshore account key.

The accounts were already frozen.

She did not know.

Helen placed a decoy drive on the table.

Olivia ordered Michael to verify it.

Michael emerged from the balcony in Daniel’s clothes.

The twins faced one another.

Daniel looked at the brother who had used his marriage, signature, and life.

Michael looked at the brother who received the public name.

Olivia had kept them divided through scarcity.

One inheritance.

One mother’s approval.

One identity.

Michael inserted the drive.

The screen displayed ACCOUNT SEIZED BY FEDERAL ORDER.

Olivia’s calm disappeared.

She grabbed the stale bread and threw it toward Helen.

“You destroyed this family.”

“No,” I said. “You documented its crimes.”

Olivia turned toward me.

“You still think you won because you left with the child.”

“I left because Emma asked to come inside.”

The simplest truth defeated her grand narrative.

She drew a small pistol from beneath the table.

Federal agents entered through the service elevator.

Michael stepped between Olivia and Daniel.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

No one was injured.

Olivia was arrested.

Daniel and Michael both survived.

The second dinner ended without a child on the balcony.

The criminal trials began months later.

Olivia, Michael, Dr. Vale, Victoria Sloan, and numerous executives faced charges.

Daniel cooperated.

His passivity remained evidence of participation.

He pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, and child endangerment.

Michael pleaded guilty to identity fraud, kidnapping, and coercive control, with consideration for cooperation.

Ashley received charges for conspiracy and unlawful recording.

Several relatives from dinner accepted plea deals for child endangerment and false statements.

No one could say they only watched.

Watching had protected the act.

Then Olivia’s defense team produced a new claim.

I was not Emma’s biological mother.

The hospital embryo records showed another woman’s egg.

If true, Olivia argued the custody case required review.

The woman listed as genetic mother was Laura Bennett.

Daniel’s former fiancée.

Emma and Emily might be full sisters.

My daughter’s identity became another legal weapon.
