Chapter 4 - EMILY

Federal agents found Emily at a boarding estate in Connecticut.

She had been raised under the surname Vale and taught that Olivia was her grandmother and legal guardian.

Laura Bennett remained alive inside a psychiatric facility.

Her diagnosis: delusional maternal fixation.

She had spent five years insisting the Mitchell family stole her daughter.

The diagnosis had been written by Dr. Samuel Vale.

The same physician preparing my incapacity report.

Laura entered independent care.

Emily entered protected child placement.

No sudden reunion.

No one told a five-year-old that every adult she knew was lying without support.

Daniel learned he had another daughter through a federal briefing.

He cried.

I felt nothing for his tears.

He had accepted Olivia’s claim that Laura died without seeing a death certificate or grave.

He said grief made him unable to investigate.

Olivia used his passivity as a weapon.

Laura’s case mirrored mine.

She challenged Olivia’s spending.

A public breakdown was staged.

Private doctors declared her unstable.

Her child disappeared into a family trust.

The Mitchell system did not need violence every time.

It needed records, witnesses, and a controlled narrative.

Michael had impersonated Daniel during Laura’s final months too.

She sometimes received kindness and sometimes cruelty from the “same” man.

The inconsistency helped doctors question her memory.

Identity substitution became psychological torture.

Laura agreed to speak with me by video.

Her first question was about Emma.

“Is she safe?”

“Yes.”

“Then do not let Daniel tell you he didn’t know.”

She described showing him bruises from Michael. Daniel promised to confront Olivia. Then disappeared for three days and returned claiming she imagined the assault.

“He knew there were two of them,” Laura said. “Maybe he didn’t know every act. He knew enough.”

Daniel later admitted it.

He had known Michael impersonated him for business meetings.

He never believed Michael entered his relationships.

He did not ask because the answer might require action.

Again, not knowing became a choice.

Rebecca used Laura’s records to challenge Dr. Vale’s license and every Mitchell guardianship he signed.

The state froze his authority.

Olivia lost the medical foundation beneath her custody plan.

Then she released Ashley’s edited dinner video publicly.

The clip began with me shouting.

It removed Emma from the balcony.

It showed me taking the suitcase, moving money, and leaving.

Headlines called me a ruthless executive abandoning her husband during a family dinner.

The full security footage existed.

But lies moved faster.

My board scheduled an emergency meeting.

Several directors feared the scandal would damage the company.

One requested my temporary resignation.

I attended by secure video.

I played the unedited footage.

Emma shivering.

Olivia holding the stale bread.

Ashley laughing.

Michael standing as Daniel.

The room became silent.

Then I showed the attempted thirty-two-million-dollar transfer.

The board voted unanimously to keep me as chief executive and refer all suspicious transactions to federal investigators.

Olivia’s media attack failed.

But it exposed Emma’s face.

I had asked authorities to protect her identity.

Someone inside Rebecca’s legal team leaked the unblurred footage.

The access log showed Rebecca’s credentials.

She had been with me when the file leaked.

Another impersonator.

Or someone she trusted.

Rebecca had an identical twin sister named Rachel Sloan.

A federal prosecutor.

Rachel had access to the case.

She denied the leak.

The twins had exchanged roles during investigations before.

Another family using resemblance to control uncertainty.

Then Emma saw the news clip on a hotel television before staff could turn it off.

She looked at me.

May you like

“Mommy, am I bad?”

That question became the worst consequence of the dinner.
