Chapter 11 - THE GIRL WITH MY NAME

Her real name was Claire Bennett.

Ashbourne raised her under my identity as a future replacement trustee.

If Juny resisted, Claire could appear as “Rachel’s daughter” and claim the trust.

She had studied our photographs, voices, and family history.

Claire did not know whether any memory belonged to her.

She asked me, “Am I Juny’s sister?”

“Biologically, maybe. Legally, no. Emotionally, you decide later.”

The answer confused her.

Ashbourne’s system expected titles, not choice.

DNA showed Claire was my biological daughter through an embryo created during surgery I had at twenty-five.

I never consented.

A surrogate was told the baby died.

Claire entered independent care.

Juny wanted to meet her.

The advocate recommended waiting.

For once, adults protected timing without secrecy.

Then Davina requested contact with June.

June refused.

Davina accepted the refusal publicly.

Privately, she sent gifts.

The court ordered her to stop.

Even remorse could become pressure.

Then Eleanor’s trial began.

The prosecution played the restaurant footage.

Juny falling.

My mother’s insult.

Davina remaining seated.

Me calling for an ambulance.

The family photo afterward.

The image that was meant to show peace became proof of emotional cruelty.

Then Eleanor’s attorney introduced a signed document from Juny.

I VOLUNTEER TO HELP AUNT DAVINA.

The handwriting was hers.

The date was before the vacation.

My daughter had signed.

The courtroom went silent.
