Chapter 10 - Emily Had Hidden the Records From Everyone
The files were not in the house.
Not on her laptop.
Not with Megan.
I searched for three days.
Then Lily solved it accidentally.
She asked for Mommy’s “blue box.”
“What blue box?”
“The one at Grandma’s?”
I froze.
“Which grandma?”
“Mommy’s mommy.”
Emily’s mother, Diane, lived in Cincinnati.
We hadn’t spoken much since the funeral.
Grief fractured both sides of the family.
I called.
Diane was quiet when I mentioned the box.
“She told me not to give it to you unless Robert caused trouble.”
I closed my eyes.
“Why?”
“She was afraid you’d confront him too quickly.”
There it was again.
Emily protecting me by controlling information.
The major twist wasn’t that she had secret evidence.
It was that she had participated in the same family pattern she hated.
She didn’t trust me to decide what to do with the truth.
Three earlier clues changed.
Her note saying “ask Daniel what he actually knows” wasn’t just frustration with Dad.
Her attempt to remove my guarantee before telling me showed she planned to solve the problem first.
And Diane’s possession of the records proved Emily wanted disclosure only on her timetable.
That hurt.
Because Emily had been right about Dad.
But she had also decided I needed managing.
The blue box contained copies of loan documents, emails, payment schedules, company memos, and a handwritten letter to me.
Daniel,
I should have told you sooner.
I kept telling myself I could fix it first.
I think your father has spent so long solving everyone’s problems that he no longer knows the difference between helping and controlling.
I’m scared you’ve learned the same thing from him in different ways.
Please don’t prove me right.
I read that sentence twice.
Then a third time.
Emily had left me more than evidence.
She had left me a warning about myself.
