Chapter 14 - Rebecca Apologized Without Asking for Forgiveness

Six months after the party, Lily agreed to see Rebecca.

Not because I encouraged it.

Because she asked.

The meeting happened with professional guidance in a neutral family center.

Rebecca wore jeans.

No heels.

No polished family image.

She sat across from Lily.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily stared at her.

Rebecca continued.

“I hit you.”

No “but.”

No explanation.

“I was scared about grown-up problems. That was not your fault.”

Lily looked at me.

I stayed quiet.

Rebecca said:

“Grandpa held your arms. I took the tablet. Then I slapped you. You remembered correctly.”

That mattered.

For months, Lily had been told she was acting.

Confused.

Dramatic.

Now an adult finally confirmed reality.

Lily asked:

“Why did you say I was lying?”

Rebecca cried.

“Because I didn’t want your dad to know what I had done.”

“Did you think I’d forget?”

Rebecca’s face broke.

“I hoped you would.”

Lily looked down at her shoes.

Then:

“I didn’t.”

“I know.”

Rebecca did not ask for a hug.

That was important.

The meeting ended after twenty minutes.

Outside, Lily held my hand.

“Do I have to forgive her?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

“No.”

“Can I later?”

“Yes.”

That answer seemed to satisfy her.

Dad’s turn came later.

He requested contact.

Lily wasn’t ready.

Dad finally accepted it.

Not happily.

But he accepted it.

For a man who had spent his entire life deciding for everyone, waiting became his hardest consequence.

Then my mother sold the pearl necklace she wore at the party.

She used the money to pay part of Lily’s therapy costs.

She didn’t tell Lily.

She told me.

I almost refused.

Then I realized something.

Allowing someone to contribute to repair wasn’t the same as forgiving them.

So I accepted the payment.

For once, money wasn't being used to buy silence.

It was paying for the consequences of what had happened.
