Chapter 8 - I Refused to Save the Storage Company
Dad wanted one thing from me.
Time.
“Give me ninety days.”
“For what?”
“To refinance everything properly.”
“You’ve had eight years.”
“The market is different now.”
“That isn’t my problem.”
His expression hardened.
“You’d let your mother lose her home?”
That was his strongest weapon.
Family consequences.
He had used it on everyone for decades.
I almost gave in.
Then I thought about Lily in the laundry room.
Rebecca striking her.
Dad holding her.
Mom watching.
All because adults were terrified of losing money, property, and reputation.
“No.”
Dad stared.
“What?”
“I’m not signing anything new.”
“Daniel—”
“No.”
My attorney began the proper process of disputing the unauthorized guarantee and protecting my legal position.
That decision could hurt Dad’s business.
Could force refinancing.
Could pressure the family home.
Could expose Rebecca’s old bailout.
For the first time, I understood why Emily had struggled.
Doing the right thing did not mean nobody innocent would suffer.
Mom might have to move.
Employees could face uncertainty.
My parents’ retirement could change.
But continuing the lie meant transferring that risk to me and eventually Lily.
I refused.
Dad reacted badly.
“You’ve always been selfish.”
I almost laughed.
“I’m selfish because I won’t guarantee debt you put in my name without asking?”
“You benefited from this family.”
There it was.
Every childhood meal.
Every college payment.
Every gift.
Converted into future ownership of me.
Then Dad made a threat.
“If this goes public, Rebecca loses everything.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
He had not meant to say it.
That was obvious.
“What does Rebecca lose?”
Dad stood.
“Nothing.”
“Sit down.”
He didn’t.
I called Megan afterward.
She found the answer.
Rebecca wasn’t merely the recipient of Dad’s money.
