Chapter 12 - Dad Finally Admitted Why He Held Lily
I met my father again weeks later.
This time he looked older.
No blazer.
No business voice.
He sat across from me and said:
“I held her.”
No excuses.
I waited.
“Rebecca was trying to take the tablet away.”
“What tablet?”
“Emily’s old one. Lily brought it downstairs.”
That was new.
Apparently Lily found one of Emily’s devices in a guest-room drawer during the party.
She played the voice memo.
Rebecca heard Emily say:
Robert can’t keep moving money like this. If he won’t fix Daniel’s guarantee, I’m done protecting him.
Rebecca panicked.
She tried to take the tablet.
Lily screamed.
Dad grabbed Lily’s arms.
Rebecca pulled the device away.
Then Lily kicked Rebecca.
Rebecca slapped her.
Hard.
Once.
The physical marks matched.
“Why put her in the laundry room?”
Dad looked ashamed.
“Your mother said she needed to calm down.”
“Was the door locked?”
“No.”
That was supported by what Lily had said earlier.
She had been told to stay there, frightened enough to obey.
Still unacceptable.
But I wanted accuracy.
Not exaggeration.
Then I asked:
“Why didn’t you call me?”
Dad looked at his hands.
“Because I knew what was on the tablet.”
“And?”
“I knew once you heard it, everything was over.”
That was the real answer.
Not the company.
Not the house.
Control.
He knew the moment I learned the truth, he would lose the ability to define our relationship.
“You held my daughter down to protect a loan.”
“No.”
I waited.
Dad looked at me.
“I held her down because I was terrified of losing all of you.”
I understood what he meant.
He believed his value to the family came from being the man who solved everything.
Exposure would reveal he had created some of the problems he claimed to solve.
“I may lose the business,” he said.
“Maybe.”
“Your mother may lose the house.”
“Maybe.”
“Rebecca hates me.”
“She’s responsible for her own choices.”
“And you?”
I looked at him.

“I don’t know what I feel yet.”
That was the first answer I gave him that he couldn't negotiate.
