Chapter 2 - The Salute That Changed Everything

Nobody spoke.
The silence was heavier than any argument.
Jason kept staring at the general.
Not understanding.
Not accepting.
Because his entire world was built on one belief.
That Emily needed him.
That without his money.
Without his name.
Without his approval.
She had nothing.
The general stood beside my bed.
Calm.
Controlled.
The kind of calm that came from years of command.
The female officer remained at attention.
That alone was enough to make Jason nervous.
He looked between them.
“Who are you?”
The general ignored him.
Instead, he looked at my baby.
Then at me.
“Are you comfortable?”
The question almost broke me.
Because nobody had asked me that all day.
Not Jason.
Not the woman standing beside him.
Nobody.
I nodded.
“Yes, sir.”
Jason heard the respect in my voice.
His eyes narrowed.
“You know him?”
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t need to.
The general placed the sealed envelope closer to me.
“You were not supposed to receive this under these circumstances.”
My fingers touched the envelope.
I knew it was important.
But I didn’t know why.
Jason stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.”
The general finally looked at him.
Just looked.
And Jason stopped.
That was when I realized something.
Jason wasn’t intimidated by authority.
He was intimidated by someone who didn’t care about his wealth.
The mistress moved closer to him.
“Jason, we should leave.”
But he didn’t move.
Because leaving meant admitting something.
He had made a mistake.

A very expensive one.
