Fear changed Jason.
The man who walked in believing he owned the room now looked uncertain.
I noticed.
The mistress noticed.
The general noticed.
Everyone did.
“Why are you afraid?”
I asked.
Jason looked at me.
“I’m not.”
But his voice betrayed him.
The female officer stepped closer.
The general remained silent.
Then Jason whispered:
“You don’t understand what happens if people find out.”
There it was.
The truth hidden inside the fear.
Not guilt.
Consequences.
I looked at the envelope.
“What happens?”
Jason said nothing.
Because he had already said too much.
The general took one step forward.
“Enough.”
The word ended the conversation.
Jason looked at him.
And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.
Respect.
