Chapter 4 - The Life Emily Never Revealed

The general did not open the envelope.
He didn’t need to.
Not yet.
Instead, he asked Jason one question.
“Why did you come here today?”
Jason looked confused.
“To end this.”
The general studied him.
“No.”
A pause.
“You came here because you thought she had nothing left.”
Jason’s expression hardened.
“That’s exactly what she has.”
I looked at him.
And for the first time, I didn’t feel hurt.
I felt disappointed.
Because I finally understood.
Jason didn’t leave because he found someone better.
He left because he believed I had become less valuable.
The mistress smiled.
“She’s emotional. She’s confused.”
The female officer looked at her.
“She just gave birth.”
The mistress looked away.
The general remained focused on me.
“Emily.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Do you want them to know?”
I looked at Jason.
At the woman beside him.
At the man who threw my belongings onto the floor.
“No.”
Everyone looked surprised.
The general nodded.
“Good.”
Jason laughed.
“Still hiding?”
I looked at him.
“No.”
I adjusted my baby’s blanket.
“I’m choosing when the truth belongs in the room.”
For the first time…
