Chapter 12 - The Missing Medical Vehicle

Every federal unit moved at once.

Roadblocks closed around Norfolk.

Traffic cameras were pulled.

Emergency frequencies were locked.

But Caleb Voss had planned the abduction around the disaster. Dozens of ambulances, rescue vans, and private medical vehicles filled the city. One more moving through blocked streets attracted no attention.

My father ordered a helicopter search.

Aaron studied the call.

“Old river terminal,” he said. “That’s where they held me before moving me overseas.”

Victor looked at him.

“That facility was demolished.”

“No. The public structure was.”

Daniel’s expression confirmed the rest.

My father noticed.

“You know the terminal.”

Daniel remained silent.

The commander searched his confiscated phone.

Most recent messages had been deleted, but location history showed visits near the Elizabeth River over the past month.

“He prepared it,” I said.

Daniel looked at me.

“You think I planned an earthquake?”

“No. You planned a collapse.”

The earthquake changed the timing, not the intention.

He had weakened the annex, drugged Mason, and arranged medical transport he could control.

If the structure failed during his private test, Mason and I would die.

If we survived, Caleb’s people would take Mason during the rescue.

Either way, Daniel gained access to the trust.

The brass key was not merely for Michael’s locker.

It fit something else at the river terminal.

Michael confirmed it.

“The locker contained a copy. The original evidence archive is stored in a mechanical vault. Same key system.”

Daniel had stolen the key from my purse because he needed it to reach the original files.

The rescue commander approached.

“Mrs. Hale, you need surgery.”

“I’m going to the terminal.”

“You may have internal bleeding.”

“My son has been abducted.”

My father said, “You go to the field hospital.”

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to order me now.”

Pain flashed through his face, but he nodded.

“Then you come under protection.”

They secured my leg and transferred me into an armored rescue vehicle. Aaron sat beside me. My father took command from the front.

Vanessa insisted on coming because she knew Daniel’s contacts.

Michael was transported to surgery.

Daniel and Victor were placed under armed guard in another vehicle.

The convoy moved toward the river.

Aaron sat across from me, holding a photograph of Mason taken from his medical file.

“Did you know?” I asked.

“That he existed? Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“How long?”

“Fourteen months.”

“Everyone knew except me.”

“I knew a child had been created from my genetic material. I didn’t know who carried him until six weeks ago.”

“Why didn’t you come?”

“Because Caleb was monitoring you.”

“And now he has Mason anyway.”

Aaron closed his eyes.

“I thought distance protected him.”

My father had believed the same thing about me.

Men in my family kept calling abandonment protection.

The convoy slowed near the industrial waterfront.

Smoke rose from the old terminal.

The missing medical vehicle stood outside with both rear doors open.

No one was inside.

Blood marked the stretcher.

I tried to stand.

Aaron held me down.

“It may not be his.”

A child’s blue T-shirt lay on the pavement.

Mason’s.

My father’s team entered the terminal.

Gunfire erupted inside.

Then the building’s loudspeakers activated.

Caleb’s voice echoed over the river.

“Emma Hale enters alone with the key.”

My father shouted toward the terminal.

“You’re not getting her.”

Caleb laughed.

“Colonel, you gave me your son ten years ago. You’ll give me your daughter today.”

A camera mounted over the entrance switched on.

A live image appeared on the rescue vehicle’s monitor.

Mason lay unconscious on a medical table.

Beside him stood Daniel.

The man we had restrained in the second convoy vehicle.

My father turned toward the rear escort.

The vehicle’s door was open.

The guards were down.

Daniel had escaped again.

And this time, he was holding a syringe over Mason’s chest.
