Chapter 9 - The Blood Type Daniel Tried to Hide

The paramedic drove Daniel face-first onto the broken pavement.

Two rescuers pinned his arms.

The gun skidded beneath the SUV.

Victor did not move.

He watched the medical unit as though the blood result concerned him more than the shot.

The medic held up the typing card.

“Mason is AB negative.”

I knew my blood type.

O positive.

Daniel had always claimed he was O negative.

Two O-type parents could not produce an AB child.

Daniel saw understanding spread across my face.

“That proves it,” he said.

“No,” the medic replied. “It proves the listed father is incorrect.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Same thing.”

The medic looked at Victor.

“Unless the records were altered.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

He took out his phone and called someone.

“Colonel Hale,” he said when the line connected, “do not land yet.”

The helicopter’s approach slowed above the damaged district.

I shouted, “Give me the phone.”

Victor ignored me.

“We have a biological complication.”

My father’s voice carried faintly through the speaker.

“What complication?”

Victor looked at Mason’s medical unit.

“The child may be yours.”

For a moment, no one moved.

The beam pinning my leg could have vanished, and I still would not have been able to stand.

“What did you say?”

Victor ended the call.

Daniel began laughing again.

This time, the sound was almost hysterical.

“You finally understand.”

“No.”

My father was sixty-one.

Mason was seven.

The accusation was obscene.

Victor crouched beside me.

“Not your father biologically. His genetic line.”

My stomach turned.

“Speak clearly.”

“Mason’s blood profile matches a classified donor registry connected to your family.”

The medic looked confused.

“What donor registry?”

Victor ignored him.

Daniel lifted his face from the pavement.

“Tell her.”

Victor’s eyes stayed on mine.

“Your father had another son.”

I had grown up an only child.

My mother died when I was seventeen. My father never remarried. There had never been mention of another child.

“Who?”

Victor looked toward the helicopter circling above us.

“Captain Aaron Hale.”

The name meant nothing to me.

Daniel smiled through blood at the corner of his mouth.

“Aaron worked for your father. He visited the house before we married.”

Memory struck.

A quiet man in uniform had come to my father’s Virginia home twice. I assumed he was an aide.

He had my father’s eyes.

I had been twenty-four.

Angry.

Determined to leave.

Daniel had encouraged every fight between my father and me.

“Are you saying Aaron is Mason’s father?”

“No,” Victor said.

Daniel’s smile vanished.

Victor continued.

“Aaron disappeared ten years ago.”

“Then how could—”

He looked toward the critical-care vehicle.

“Mason was conceived through a fertility procedure you were told was routine hormonal treatment.”

My body went cold.

Before Mason, I had suffered two early miscarriages. Daniel took me to a private clinic. He handled every appointment, every form, every bill.

The doctor said they were improving our chances naturally.

I never consented to donor material.

Daniel had used someone else’s genetic sample.

“Why?” I whispered.

He looked away.

Victor answered.

“Because Aaron Hale was beneficiary to a protected family trust.”

The hotel, the marriage, Mason, my estrangement from my father—none of it had been random.

Daniel did not marry me only for money.

He created a child who could inherit money hidden beyond my reach.

The helicopter circled lower.

Victor’s phone rang.

He answered.

My father’s voice was no longer controlled.

“Victor, step away from my daughter.”

Victor looked up.

Then my father added, “Because Aaron Hale is not missing anymore.”

Every face turned toward the helicopter.

A second figure sat beside my father in the open doorway.

Even through the dust, I saw the same eyes I had seen in the old family photographs.

Aaron was alive.
