Chapter 15 - The Second Heir

Daniel twisted my wrist until the vial slipped between my fingers.
I caught it against my palm before it hit the floor.
Half the glass was cracked.
A thin line of liquid ran across my skin.
Mason’s breathing weakened against my chest.
My father’s team surrounded Daniel, but he held the gun beneath Mason’s chin.
Everyone stopped.
“Back away,” Daniel ordered.
My father lowered his weapon first.
Aaron followed.
I stared at the vial.
The label matched the one from Mason’s recording.
But less than half the dose remained.
The medic outside spoke through Aaron’s radio.
“Do not inject without weight calculation. An incomplete dose could worsen the reaction.”
“How much does he need?”
“We need the concentration.”
The label’s lower half had shattered.
Daniel smiled.
“I know the concentration.”
“Tell me.”
“Give me the hard drive.”
My father’s voice turned cold.
“You are not leaving.”
Daniel pressed the gun closer to Mason.
“Then he dies here.”
The live feed on the vault screen continued.
Vanessa stood frozen beside Michael’s hospital bed while the armed man held her.
Michael was unconscious.
The stranger placed a photograph against the camera.
It showed Daniel at a private clinic holding a newborn girl.
A date on the hospital bracelet placed the birth six years earlier.
One year after Mason.
Vanessa stared at the photograph.
Daniel’s face changed.
He knew the child.
I looked at him.
“Who is she?”
He did not answer.
The man on the screen did.
“Her name is Lily Grant.”
Thomas Grant’s surviving daughter.
Olivia’s younger sister.
Daniel had created another heir using stolen genetic material—then placed the child inside the family of his business partner.
Olivia had discovered that Lily was not biologically related to Thomas.
That was the secret hidden on Daniel’s phone.
That was why Olivia died.
The man beside Vanessa continued.
“Lily carries a second protected lineage. Whoever controls both children controls two trusts, six redevelopment zones, and federal land rights worth billions.”
My father looked at Victor, who had been brought into the terminal under guard.
Victor’s face confirmed it.
Daniel’s crimes were larger than one family.
Larger than the collapsed hotel.
Mason and Lily were living keys to an empire built through stolen identities.
Daniel tightened his grip on me.
“You want the dosage?”
“Yes.”
“Release me with the drive.”
Aaron moved one step forward.
Daniel aimed at him.
“No.”
Mason stirred.
His eyes opened slightly.
“Mom.”
“I’m here.”
His hand lifted and touched my cheek.
Daniel glanced down.
That was his mistake.
Ghostlike speed had never belonged to my family, but desperation did.
I drove the cracked vial into Daniel’s gun hand.
Glass cut both of us.
He fired.
The bullet struck the ceiling.
Aaron tackled him.
My father pulled Mason and me away.
The vial remained in my palm, nearly empty.
The medic rushed inside and examined it.
“Maybe enough for a loading dose.”
“Maybe?”
“It could buy us time.”
“Do it.”
He calculated Mason’s weight, drew the remaining liquid into a syringe, and injected it through the IV line.
For ten seconds, nothing happened.
Then Mason’s monitor slowed.
His oxygen level rose by one point.
Then another.
He was not safe.
But he was still alive.
Daniel lay restrained beneath Aaron, blood running from his hand.
Caleb had disappeared behind the vault door.
The hard drive was gone.
My father saw it too.
“Seal the exits.”
Before the order could be carried out, the terminal lights went black.
Emergency doors opened along the river wall.
A boat engine roared outside.
Caleb was escaping with the evidence.
The live feed from Michael’s hospital room flickered.
The man holding Vanessa removed his mask.
Aaron went pale.
My father whispered, “No.”
The man had their eyes.
He looked older than Aaron but younger than my father.
Another Hale.
A brother neither of them had mentioned.
He smiled into the camera.
“Emma, your father lied about how many children he had.”
My father closed his eyes.
The man continued.
“Bring Mason and Lily to the original Hale estate before midnight, or I release the records proving Colonel Jonathan Hale created the inheritance program himself.”
I looked at my father.
He did not deny it.
Daniel began laughing from the floor.
“You thought I built this?”
The river doors opened wider.
Through the darkness, Caleb’s boat pulled away carrying the stolen drive.
At the same time, Mason’s monitor alarm sounded again.
The partial antidote was failing.
My father reached for me.
I pulled Mason away from him.
“Tell me the truth.”
His face broke.
Before he could speak, Aaron’s radio crackled.
A search team had found a second medical vehicle beneath the terminal.
Inside was a little girl with Daniel’s eyes.
Lily Grant was unconscious, connected to the same drug-delivery system used on Mason.
And taped to her chest was a handwritten note:
