Chapter 14 - The Vault Behind the River Wall

I threw the brass key across the room.
Not to Caleb.
Not to Daniel.
It struck the floor beneath Mason’s medical table.
Both men moved.
Caleb bent first.
I drove my shoulder into him.
Pain exploded through my injured leg, but momentum carried us into the table. The syringe flew from his hand.
Daniel lunged for the key.
Mason rolled weakly toward the table’s edge.
I caught him before he fell.
Caleb struck me across the back and grabbed my hair.
I held Mason against my chest.
Daniel found the key.
He ran to a steel panel built into the river wall.
“Stop him!” Caleb shouted.
Daniel inserted the key.
The vault opened with a deep mechanical click.
Cold air rushed out.
Inside were rows of sealed cases, hard drives, medical files, and specimen containers.
A screen activated automatically.
Daniel’s face appeared in an old video.
He was younger, standing inside a fertility clinic with Victor Lang.
The date was ten years earlier.
Before our wedding.
Victor’s recorded voice said, “Emma must remain estranged from Colonel Hale. Marriage gives you proximity, but the child gives you leverage.”
Daniel answered, “And if she refuses the procedure?”
“She won’t know there is one.”
My stomach turned.
The recording continued.
Daniel asked, “What happens to Aaron?”
Victor smiled.
“He stays dead.”
The vault had been programmed to play the file when Daniel’s key opened it.
Someone expected him to reach this moment.
Caleb released my hair and stared at the screen.
“You said that recording was destroyed.”
Daniel backed away from the vault.
“I never saw it.”
Another video began.
This one showed Caleb signing a transfer order for Aaron.
Then a third showed Vanessa entering Daniel’s office months earlier and planting a listening device.
Everyone had been recorded.
Everyone had been used.
Mason coughed against my shoulder.
His skin was hotter.
“The antidote,” I said.
Caleb glanced toward the fallen syringe.
Daniel was closer.
He stepped on it.
The barrel cracked.
Clear liquid spread across the concrete.
I screamed.
Daniel looked down at the ruined antidote.
For one instant, shock appeared.
Then he said, “There’s another dose in the vault.”
Caleb ran toward the medical cases.
Daniel raised the gun.
A shot struck Caleb’s shoulder.
He spun and fell behind the vault door.
I dragged Mason toward the cases.
Daniel aimed at me.
“Don’t.”
“You said there’s another dose.”
“There is.”
“Then move.”
“You don’t know which one.”
The cases were coded with numbers, not names.
Dozens of vials sat inside refrigerated trays.
Mason whimpered.
I looked at Daniel.
“What was the compound?”
He smiled.
“You need me alive.”
Outside, gunfire echoed.
My father’s team had breached the outer corridor.
Daniel grabbed one hard drive from the vault.
“This contains enough leverage to protect me.”
“You poisoned your son.”
“He was never my son.”
The terminal speakers crackled.
A new voice came through.
Mason’s.
Recorded days earlier.
“Mom, Dad keeps a black case under the garage floor.”
Daniel froze.
The screen changed.
Video from Mason’s tablet showed him following Daniel into our garage. Daniel lifted a hidden floor panel and removed a black case filled with vials identical to those in the vault.
Mason had recorded the labels.
The system enlarged one.
The medic outside could now identify the antidote.
Aaron’s voice sounded through my radio.
“Emma, case row three, vial twelve.”
Daniel raised the gun toward Mason.
“He doesn’t leave this room.”
I covered my son with my body.
The side wall exploded inward.
Dust and sparks filled the chamber.
My father’s rescue team entered through the breach.
Daniel fired blindly.
The bullet struck the refrigerated case.
Glass shattered.
Vials burst across the floor.
I reached for row three.
My hand closed around vial twelve just as Daniel grabbed my wrist.
Behind him, the vault screen switched to one final live feed.
Vanessa stood beside Michael’s hospital bed.
A man held a knife to her throat.
