Chapter 13 - The Dose Waiting in Mason’s Blood

Daniel looked into the terminal camera.

“Bring the key.”

I grabbed the door handle.

Aaron stopped me.

“It’s a funnel.”

“My son is on that table.”

“And Daniel wants you beside him.”

Caleb’s voice came through the loudspeaker.

“Five minutes.”

A digital clock appeared on the feed.

Daniel tapped the syringe.

“This isn’t the poison,” he said. “It’s the antidote.”

The medic beside us studied the image.

“What did you give the child?”

Daniel smiled.

“A compound that binds slowly. Without the second injection, organ failure begins within the hour.”

The fever, coughing, bruising, and respiratory collapse were not separate problems.

They were stages.

“You planned this long before the earthquake,” I said.

“I planned for every possibility.”

“You didn’t plan for him to record you.”

“That video proves abuse. It doesn’t prove what was in the syringe.”

“You just admitted it.”

“On a compromised feed controlled by armed criminals.”

He believed he could still manufacture doubt.

The clock dropped below four minutes.

My father’s team found two side entrances wired with explosives.

Caleb had turned the terminal into a trap.

Vanessa examined the live feed.

“Daniel’s jacket.”

“What about it?”

“It’s different.”

The dust pattern had changed. The tear at his shoulder was gone.

The man beside Mason wore Daniel’s face, but not Daniel’s damaged suit.

Aaron leaned toward the monitor.

“Mask.”

Advanced silicone disguise.

Caleb’s network had used false identities before.

The man holding the syringe was not Daniel.

Then where was Daniel?

A shot sounded behind our convoy.

Victor collapsed.

Daniel stepped from beneath the escort vehicle, holding a guard’s pistol.

He had hidden under the chassis after overpowering the men inside.

He aimed at my father.

“Give me the key.”

My father turned slowly.

“You drugged a child you raised.”

Daniel’s hand shook.

“He was never mine.”

“You made him yours when you signed his birth certificate.”

“I made him an investment.”

Aaron moved between Daniel and me.

Daniel aimed at him.

“You’re the reason all of this happened.”

Aaron did not flinch.

“No. Your greed is.”

The terminal clock reached two minutes.

Inside, the disguised man pressed the needle against Mason’s chest.

I held up the brass key.

“Daniel, call him off.”

“I can’t.”

“You’re working with Caleb.”

“He stopped working for me this morning.”

That was the first honest fear I heard in Daniel’s voice.

Caleb had taken control once the earthquake exposed the conspiracy.

Daniel wanted the trust.

Caleb wanted the evidence and perhaps Mason himself.

“What is in the vault?” I asked.

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the terminal.

“Proof Victor built the network.”

Victor lay bleeding but conscious near the escort vehicle.

He coughed.

“That’s not all.”

Everyone looked at him.

“The vault contains parentage records for every child created through the program.”

Mason was not the only child.

Daniel and Caleb had used stolen genetic material from military personnel to produce heirs, access trusts, manipulate estates, and build legal claims to protected assets.

Olivia Grant may have discovered the program.

That was why she died.

The clock reached one minute.

The disguised man raised the syringe.

Caleb’s voice ordered, “Emma alone.”

I made my decision.

I took the key and moved toward the terminal.

My father caught my arm.

“You may not come back.”

“Mason won’t come back if I stay.”

He released me.

Aaron handed me a small radio.

“Say the word ‘home’ if you see Caleb.”

“Why?”

“Because Caleb never comes alone.”

I crossed the open pavement.

The terminal door unlocked.

Inside, red emergency lights illuminated a corridor lined with abandoned cargo cages.

Mason’s weak coughing echoed ahead.

I followed it into the central chamber.

The man wearing Daniel’s face stood beside the medical table.

He removed the mask.

Caleb Voss smiled.

Then a second door opened behind me.

The real Daniel entered carrying the gun he had just held outside.

I turned toward the doorway.

My father and Aaron were no longer visible.

Daniel shut the door.

“He thinks I stayed with the convoy,” he said.

I looked at the gun.

“You made a deal.”

“With Caleb.”

Caleb held out his hand for the brass key.

Daniel aimed at him instead.

“No. The vault belongs to me.”

Caleb pressed the syringe against Mason’s heart.

“Then decide whether your fortune matters more than your witness.”

Daniel’s eyes moved from Mason to the vault.
