Chapter 3 - The Recording That Was Never Supposed To Exist

The FBI agents moved everyone away from the center of the ballroom.
The celebration was gone.
The perfect image was gone.
All that remained was the truth.
Julian kept staring at my watch.
“You planned this.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
I touched my stomach.
“I survived this.”
That was the difference.
For months, I had tried to save our marriage.
I ignored the late nights.
The secret meetings.
The way Julian stopped looking at me like his wife and started looking at me like an obstacle.
I blamed stress.
Business.
Pressure.
Anything except the truth.
Then I found the first clue.
A hidden bank transfer.
A payment connected to Chloe.
I confronted Julian.
He smiled.
He told me I was paranoid.
He told me pregnancy had made me emotional.
I believed him.
Until I heard the recording.
The FBI agent connected my watch to a tablet.
The audio played.
Julian’s voice filled the ballroom.
“She’ll sign everything after the baby arrives.”
A second voice answered.
Chloe.
“And if she refuses?”
Julian paused.
“She won’t have a choice.”
The guests gasped.
I closed my eyes.
Because hearing it again still hurt.
Not because I didn’t know.
Because everyone else finally did.
Arthur’s expression changed.
“Julian…”
But Julian ignored him.
He looked at Chloe.
“You knew?”
She stepped back.
“You told me everything.”
That sentence destroyed them both.
Because the truth was finally out.
They weren’t protecting each other.
They were protecting themselves.
Then the FBI agent placed another file on the table.
“Mr. Vance, this investigation is not about an affair.”
Julian looked confused.
“Then what?”
The agent opened the folder.
“This is about fraud, illegal asset transfers, and a planned attempt to remove your wife from control of her inheritance.”
The room froze.
Julian had not just planned to leave me.

He planned to take everything.
