Chapter 10 - THE PARTY WAS A TRAP

The full video ran twenty-three minutes.

I hated every second.

Not because I learned Richard was cruel.

I already knew.

Because I watched his cruelty being prepared like a stage.

Olivia told him I had mocked his income.

False.

She told him I planned to take Lily and leave.

False then.

She told him Julian Sterling had laughed at him.

Also false.

Richard drank.

Got angrier.

Vanessa positioned herself beside the cake.

Then I entered with Lily.

Five minutes later, Richard had his fist in my hair.

The video preserved everything.

My face hitting the cake.

Lily screaming.

Olivia’s satisfied smile.

Vanessa laughing.

Then my slap.

The edited clip made me the first violent person.

The full clip proved otherwise.

I copied it onto my phone.

Then another drive.

Then Julian’s laptop.

Three copies.

Olivia watched without speaking.

Richard stopped the video before the cake impact finished.

“I know what I did.”

I looked at him.

“Lily knows too.”

His face crumpled.

I hated that part of me still recognized his pain.

Love doesn’t disappear on schedule.

Trust can.

Safety can.

A marriage can become impossible before affection understands what happened.

Richard looked at Olivia.

“You wanted me to attack her.”

“I wanted you to confront her.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was angry.”

“Yes.”

“You put Vanessa there to film her reaction.”

“Yes.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You’re admitting everything now?”

Olivia looked exhausted.

“Jonathan is alive. Charles is dead. The trust has been taken. There is no point protecting the old version.”

“The old version?”

I asked.

She looked at me.

“The story Charles made everyone follow.”

“What story?”

“That Evelyn ran away because she was unstable.”

Julian’s face hardened.

“My family said the same thing.”

“Because Jonathan told them.”

“Where was Evelyn?”

Olivia looked toward my ring.

“Hiding.”

“From Jonathan?”

“Yes.”

“And Charles?”

“Eventually.”

“Why did she trust you?”

Olivia’s eyes filled.

“She didn’t.”

That answer felt honest.

“She needed me.”

“What did you do?”

“I helped her leave Long Island.”

Julian stared.

“You knew where my sister went.”

“For one night.”

“You let me search for thirty-three years.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of Jonathan?”

“Yes.”

“What did he have on you?”

Olivia looked at Richard.

Charles.

Her husband.

“Charles had already moved money for Jonathan.”

Richard closed his eyes.

His father wasn’t an innocent accountant caught in someone else’s scheme.

He had participated.

Olivia continued.

“Evelyn discovered it. She was pregnant. She said she would tell Julian.”

I looked at Julian.

“You.”

He nodded.

“So Jonathan convinced everyone she was unstable.”

“Yes,” Olivia said.

“Then?”

“She disappeared before he could stop her.”

“With your help.”

“For one night.”

“What happened after?”

“I drove her to a motel. She left before sunrise.”

“And you never saw her again?”

Olivia hesitated.

Then:

“Once.”

“When?”

“After Maya was born.”

My skin prickled.

“Why?”

“She needed documents.”

“What documents?”

“Proof Jonathan had diverted her trust.”

“So you helped?”

Olivia laughed bitterly.

“No.”

Her eyes filled.

“I betrayed her.”

Silence.

“I told Charles where she was.”

Julian stood.

“You what?”

“Charles said Jonathan would kill Richard if I didn’t.”

Richard looked up sharply.

“I was five.”

“Yes.”

“What did Jonathan threaten?”

“To make an accident look natural.”

Richard stared at her.

I thought of family systems built around fear.

People often use protection to justify unforgivable things.

“I chose my son,” Olivia whispered.

I looked at her.

“And what happened to Evelyn?”

“I don’t know.”

“Because you gave them her location.”

“Yes.”

My hand tightened around the ring.

For years Olivia insulted my mother without saying her name.

Now I understood why.

Contempt was easier than guilt.

Then Julian noticed another file.

OLIVIA CALL ARCHIVE.

Audio recordings.

One dated six years earlier.

The month before Richard met me.

We played it.

Charles’s voice.

Still alive then.

“Maya’s at Harbor Light. Ring confirmed.”

Olivia:

“Richard won’t like being managed.”

Charles:

“He doesn’t need to know.”

Olivia:

“And if he actually falls for her?”

Charles laughed.

“Better.”

Then:

“Love makes people sign things.”

Richard left the room.

He did not slam the door.

He simply walked away.

I did not follow.

The next call was dated the day Lily was born.

Charles:

“Girl?”

Olivia:

“Yes.”

Charles:

“Then we have the successor.”

My stomach turned.

They had celebrated Lily’s birth as a trust event.

Not a child.

Then Charles said:

“Make sure Maya never learns what happens at four.”

Olivia whispered on the recording:

“And if she does?”

Charles answered:

“Then Richard gets custody.”

I looked toward the doorway where my husband had disappeared.

The custody plan had existed from Lily’s first day of life.
