Chapter 14 - WHAT JULIAN NEVER TOLD ME

The archive generator came on after thirty seconds.

The computer did not.

The paternity file had vanished from the local queue.

Julian swore under his breath.

I looked at him.

“Talk.”

“Maya.”

“No.”

He stopped.

“Someone says you know why they don’t want me seeing that name.”

“I don’t know who your father is.”

“That wasn’t the accusation.”

Julian’s face tightened.

I continued.

“What did you hide about Evelyn and Jonathan?”

He sat down.

“My brother loved her.”

Olivia laughed bitterly.

“That is a gentle word for it.”

Julian ignored her.

“They were close when we were young.”

“How close?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you know they had a relationship?”

“I suspected.”

“Before she disappeared?”

“Yes.”

The admission hurt.

Not because he owed me thirty-three years ago.

Because he had stood in my backyard tonight and described Evelyn’s disappearance as though Jonathan were only an older brother who valued privacy.

He already knew there was more.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t know whether it mattered.”

“Everything matters.”

“You had just been assaulted.”

“That doesn’t make me stupid.”

“I know.”

“Then stop deciding what I can handle.”

He closed his eyes.

“You’re right.”

I hated how easy accountability sounded compared to how rarely people practiced it.

“What happened between them?”

Julian spoke carefully.

“Our father wanted Evelyn to marry outside the family business.”

“Jonathan was her brother.”

“Half-brother.”

The room went silent.

I stared.

“What?”

“Our mother was Evelyn’s mother.”

“Our father was not her biological father.”

My entire understanding shifted.

“So Jonathan and Evelyn were not biologically related?”

“No.”

“Did everyone know?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“Our parents. Me eventually. Jonathan.”

“Then their relationship wasn’t incest.”

“No.”

Olivia whispered:

“But it would have destroyed the Sterling name.”

Of course.

Appearances again.

Julian continued.

“Our father forbade it.”

“What did Jonathan do?”

“He became controlling.”

“How?”

“He said Evelyn belonged with him because he was the only person who knew the truth.”

That sentence told me more than Julian intended.

Possession disguised as protection.

I knew the pattern.

“Did Evelyn want him?”

“At first.”

“And later?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“She discovered the trust transfers.”

Jonathan had been taking money.

Charles helped.

Evelyn threatened exposure.

Then she discovered she was pregnant.

Potentially Jonathan’s child.

Me.

“Did Jonathan know?”

“Yes.”

“Did he want me?”

Julian looked away.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He believed having a child with Evelyn would force our father to accept them.”

My stomach turned.

I had been leverage before birth.

Again.

Different family.

Same disease.

Then Julian said:

“But Evelyn told me something before she disappeared.”

“What?”

“She said Jonathan was not the father.”

Silence.

Olivia stared.

“You never told anyone that.”

“No.”

“Who did she say was?”

“She refused to name him.”

My chest tightened.

“Then the paternity acknowledgment might contain someone else.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you hide this tonight?”

“Because if Jonathan has spent thirty-three years believing you’re his daughter, learning he isn’t your father could make him more dangerous.”

That was at least rational.

Still his choice to withhold.

I looked at Richard.

He had been quiet for several minutes.

“What?”

He held Vanessa’s phone.

The anonymous messages.

“I think I know who is sending these.”

“How?”

“The wording.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What wording?”

Richard opened an older message.

GET THE RING FROM MAYA.

Then tonight’s:

DO NOT LET MAYA SEE THE FATHER’S NAME.

Another:

CHECK THE TRUSTEE PAGE.

Richard looked at Olivia.

“Dad wrote like this.”

Olivia stared.

“Charles is dead.”

“I know.”

“Then?”

Richard opened an archived email from Charles.

Same all-capital emphasis.

Same phrase structure.

Same habit of omitting contractions.

Vanessa whispered, “Could be copied.”

“Yes.”

But then Richard showed the phone number routing.

The anonymous sender used a private Vance family relay account.

Created eleven years earlier.

Administrator:

Charles Vance.

Someone still controlled his account.

Olivia looked genuinely frightened.

“Jonathan?”

“Maybe.”

Then my phone buzzed.

Not Vanessa’s.

Mine.

Unknown sender.

Finally.

A photograph.

Charles Vance.

Older.

Gray hair.

Alive.

Standing beside Jonathan Sterling.

Timestamp:

Three minutes ago.

Inside the archive building.

We all looked around.

The photograph had been taken somewhere nearby.

Richard whispered:

“My father is dead.”

Olivia began shaking.

“I buried him.”

Another message.

YOU BURIED THE BODY I GAVE YOU.

Olivia covered her mouth.

Richard went white.

The message continued.

CHARLES IS ALIVE.

Then:

AND HE KNOWS MAYA’S FATHER.

A sound came from the hallway outside the vault room.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Richard moved toward the door.

I stopped him.

“Lily.”

He froze.

Our daughter was with the caretaker in the front office.

We ran.

The office was empty.

Caretaker unconscious? Need avoid unexplained violence. The chair was overturned, but he was not there.

“Lily!”

No answer.

My heart stopped.

Then Lily called from behind the archive counter.

“Mommy?”

I nearly collapsed.

She crawled out holding her stuffed rabbit.

The caretaker had apparently told her to hide when the lights went out.

“Where is he?”

She pointed toward the side door.

“He went with Grandpa.”

Richard froze.

“What grandpa?”

Lily looked confused.

“The old man.”

She had never met Charles.

Yet someone had introduced himself as her grandfather.

Then Lily held out a folded sheet of paper.

“He said give you this.”

I opened it.

One sentence.

IF YOU WANT THE REAL PATERNITY RECORD, COME BACK TO THE VANCE HOUSE BEFORE MIDNIGHT.

Below it:

BRING JULIAN.

Olivia whispered:

“No.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

Her face turned pale.

“Because there is something hidden inside the Vance house Julian has never seen.”

“What?”

She swallowed.
