Chapter 12 - THE RECORDING ABOUT JULIAN

Julian didn’t defend himself immediately.
That made me listen.
“Play it.”
I did.
Charles continued on-screen.
“Julian has spent years pretending he didn’t know Evelyn was pregnant.”
Julian’s face changed.
“That’s a lie.”
Olivia looked at him.
“Is it?”
“Yes.”
“Let it play.”
Charles:
“He knew there was a child before Evelyn disappeared.”
Julian stood.
“No.”
I paused the video.
“Sit.”
He looked at me.
“I did not know about you.”
“I said sit.”
He sat.
I pressed play.
Charles:
“Jonathan showed him the medical report.”
Julian whispered, “What medical report?”
Charles:
“Julian refused to support Evelyn’s claim against the trust because he believed she was using the pregnancy to force control.”
Julian shook his head.
“I never saw any report.”
Olivia watched him carefully.
I could not tell whether she believed him.
Neither could I.
The recording continued.
“Evelyn left after Julian signed the temporary suspension.”
Julian went white.
“Suspension?”
Then Charles held up a document.
Sterling Orchid Trust — Beneficiary Suspension.
Signature:
Julian Sterling.
Julian stood again.
“I never signed that.”
I believed his shock.
Still not proof.
“Could somebody copy your signature?”
“Of course.”
“Jonathan?”
“Yes.”
“Charles?”
“Possibly.”
The video ended with Charles telling Olivia:
If Maya ever meets Julian, he will either recognize the ring or pretend not to. Watch which.
I looked at Julian.
“You recognized it immediately.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn wore it every day.”
“Did you sign anything affecting her trust?”
“No.”
“Ever?”
He hesitated.
“Julian.”
“I signed one family resolution after she disappeared.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“A temporary administrative order.”
“Doing what?”
“Allowing Jonathan to continue managing her assets until she returned.”
Olivia laughed bitterly.
“So you did sign.”
“Not a suspension.”
“Did you read the entire document?”
Julian’s face changed.
There it was.
The same disease as Richard.
Trusting family paperwork.
“I read the resolution.”
“Every attachment?”
“No.”
I almost laughed because the pattern was so cruelly consistent.
Richard trusted Charles.
Julian trusted Jonathan.
Both men assumed paperwork could not betray them because family authority had always benefited them.
“Could the suspension have been attached?”
“Yes.”
Julian looked sick.
“I didn’t know.”
How many lives had been damaged by those three words?
I didn’t know.
Vanessa checked the old trust copies.
There was a Julian signature.
But no original to compare.
Julian opened his wallet and removed an old business card.
Signature on the back from years earlier.
Not enough.
He said:
“My archive at home contains original signed documents from 1993.”
“Can anyone else access them?”
“My staff.”
“That doesn’t make me feel better.”
“It shouldn’t.”
Good answer.
Then Olivia’s phone rang from somewhere inside the archive room.
We all froze.
She had left it on the cabinet.
Caller:
JONATHAN.
Julian stared.
Olivia answered on speaker.
A man’s voice.
Older.
Calm.
“Olivia.”
Julian closed his eyes.
He recognized the voice.
“Jonathan.”
Silence.
Then the man laughed softly.
“Little brother.”
Julian’s hand gripped the desk.
“You’re dead.”
“So Evelyn was crazy.”
The cruelty in that sentence carried history.
Julian’s face hardened.
“Where is box 4721?”
“With me.”
“What do you want?”
“Nothing from you.”
Then:
“Maya.”
I felt cold.
“I’m here.”
“I’ve waited thirty years to hear your voice.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother stole something from me.”
“The ring?”
“No.”
“What?”
“My inheritance.”
Julian shook his head.
“Jonathan, the Orchid Trust was Evelyn’s.”
“That’s the story she told.”
“What’s the truth?”
He laughed again.
“Ask Julian.”
I looked at Julian.
He looked genuinely confused.
Jonathan continued.
“Ask him why our father rewrote the trust six weeks before Evelyn disappeared.”
Julian whispered, “He didn’t.”
“He did.”
“Where is it?”
“In 4721.”
The box he took.
My pulse pounded.
“What does the new trust say?”
Jonathan’s voice softened.
“It says Evelyn was never the true beneficiary.”
Silence.
“Then who was?”
A pause.
“You.”
Me.
I stared at the phone.
“That’s impossible.”
“You were not born yet.”
Exactly.
Jonathan continued:
“And that is why your mother ran.”
The line disconnected.
Vanessa’s anonymous messenger immediately sent another text.
JONATHAN IS LYING ABOUT ONE THING.
Then:
MAYA WAS ALREADY BORN WHEN THE TRUST WAS REWRITTEN.
I stopped breathing.
My birth certificate said 1994.
Evelyn disappeared in 1993.
The rewritten trust supposedly came six weeks before.
