Chapter 2 - THE MESSAGE ON VANESSA’S PHONE

“Show me your phone.”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“No.”

I shifted Lily higher against my chest.

“You just got a message telling you to take my ring.”

Richard stepped closer.

“Maya, enough.”

I looked at him.

“Did you know?”

“Know what?”

“That Vanessa was waiting for instructions about my necklace.”

“You’re making things up.”

Julian spoke before I could.

“I saw her screen too.”

Richard’s face changed.

Vanessa looked toward Olivia.

Wrong move.

Julian noticed.

So did I.

Olivia folded her arms.

“This is getting hysterical.”

“Hysterical.”

I repeated the word.

She had used it dozens of times whenever I reacted to something cruel.

Tonight it sounded rehearsed.

Julian moved toward Vanessa.

“I am not asking for your phone.”

She relaxed slightly.

“I am asking you not to delete that message.”

Her thumb immediately moved.

I laughed without humor.

“That answers enough.”

Vanessa put the phone behind her back.

Richard turned toward Julian.

“With respect, this is a private family matter.”

Julian looked at the crushed birthday cake.

Then at the frosting still drying against my hair.

“You made it public when you assaulted your wife in front of forty witnesses.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what happened before.”

“I know what I saw.”

I hated how much those words affected me.

For years, everything inside the Vance family came with an explanation.

Richard was stressed.

Olivia was traditional.

Vanessa was joking.

I was sensitive.

Someone finally described what happened without softening it.

I kissed Lily’s forehead.

“Get my bag.”

Richard stepped in front of me again.

“No.”

I stared.

“Move.”

“You are not taking Lily somewhere in the middle of the night because you’re having a meltdown.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed.

The word meltdown landed exactly where Richard wanted it.

I saw the shift immediately.

Not just marital control.

A narrative.

I lowered my voice.

“I’m taking my daughter away from a backyard where she just watched her father shove her mother into her birthday cake.”

Richard looked around.

People were still watching.

That embarrassed him more than what he had done.

He stepped aside.

Olivia said, “If you walk out tonight, don’t expect to come crawling back.”

I almost smiled.

“That would require wanting to.”

I moved toward the house.

Julian followed several feet behind us.

“Mrs. Vance.”

“Maya.”

He nodded.

“Maya. May I look at the ring?”

I stopped near the patio doors.

Lily had buried her face against my shoulder.

“Why?”

“There may be an inscription inside.”

I removed the chain carefully.

The ring had never left it during my adult life.

My mother made me promise not to wear it on my finger.

I always thought that was because it was old.

Julian held it beneath the patio light.

His hands shook.

“There.”

“What?”

Inside the narrow gold band were tiny engraved characters.

I had seen them before.

I assumed they were scratches.

Julian read them.

“E.S.-17-ORCHID.”

Evelyn Sterling.

My mother’s first initial.

Her last initial was supposed to be H.

Hale.

Julian turned the ring.

Another mark appeared beneath the first inscription.

Four digits.

Julian went still.

“What is it?”

He looked at Olivia.

Her face told me she knew.

“Julian,” she said quietly, “don’t.”

He stared at her.

“How do you know what I’m about to say?”

“I don’t.”

“You just told me not to.”

Richard came inside behind us.

Vanessa remained near the door.

Olivia’s eyes never left the ring.

Julian looked at me.

“4721 is not a date.”

“What is it?”

“A Sterling archive reference.”

My pulse changed.

“What archive?”

“Our family maintained private document boxes before everything became digital.”

Olivia laughed.

“That system was dismantled decades ago.”

Julian turned.

“I didn’t say where it was.”

Silence.

Vanessa looked down at her phone again.

I caught her wrist before she could turn away.

Not hard.

Enough to see the screen.

Another message.

Same sender.

Unknown number.

DO NOT LET JULIAN OPEN 4721.

Vanessa jerked free.

Richard stared at her.

“What the hell is that?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re receiving instructions about my wife?”

“I said I don’t know.”

Olivia stepped toward Vanessa.

“Give me the phone.”

Vanessa pulled away.

“No.”

The resistance surprised Olivia.

For the first time, Vanessa looked frightened of her.

Julian handed the ring back to me.

“Do not give this to anyone.”

Richard laughed.

“You’re making her paranoid.”

Julian turned toward him.

“Your mother knew the archive system was dismantled.”

“So?”

“I never told her it was.”

Olivia’s face tightened.

Julian continued.

“And somebody is currently messaging Vanessa about a Sterling archive number that was hidden inside Maya’s ring.”

I looked at Olivia.

“How long have you known who my mother was?”

She said nothing.

“How long?”

Richard stepped between us.

“Stop interrogating my mother.”

I looked at him.

“Your mother knew something about mine before I ever entered this family.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know she’s terrified of a ring.”

“I’m not terrified,” Olivia snapped.

Then she made her first serious mistake.

She pointed at the necklace.

“That ring should have disappeared with Evelyn.”

Nobody moved.

Julian’s voice became very quiet.

“Should have?”

Olivia’s mouth opened.

No sound came.

I felt Lily shift.

She whispered against my shoulder.

“Mommy, Grandma tried to take it before.”

My blood went cold.

I looked down.

“What?”

Lily pointed toward my necklace.

“The flower ring.”

“When?”

“At your room.”

Olivia went pale.

Richard stared at his mother.

“What is she talking about?”

Lily continued before anyone could stop her.

“Grandma said you wouldn’t notice.”

The entire room went silent.
