Chapter 13 - THE UNKNOWN SAMPLE

The newborn girl had been delivered by a surrogate under a sealed military program.
Independent testing showed no match to Julian, Ethan, or Charles.
The paternal line matched Audrey Vance.
Audrey nearly collapsed.
He had stored samples decades earlier.
Charles used them without his knowledge.
The fifth child—Grace—was not part of the Bennett trust.
She was an insurance policy.
If every Bennett male claim failed, Audrey’s genetic line would create a separate medical patent transfer.
The program manufactured children to keep institutions alive.
Not families.
Grace entered independent neonatal care.
No adult claimed immediate custody.
Clara requested contact but did not call herself Mother in the child’s room.
She said:
“I’m someone whose body was used to create you. I will not use that fact to own you.”
Then the criminal trial began.
Julian entered the courtroom smiling.
He believed the complexity would create reasonable doubt.
