Chapter 4 - THE TWO SIENNAS

The woman outside called herself Serena Brooks.

Sienna’s identical twin.

Separated at birth through a private adoption program linked to Audrey’s former clinic.

Serena had carried Lily.

Sienna had carried Noah.

A third surrogate had carried Owen.

Julian kept the twins apart and used the same identity across records.

If one woman objected, he replaced her in appointments.

If one asked questions, he blamed the other.

Sienna had known she had a twin.

She claimed she did not know Serena carried another child.

Serena said Sienna knew everything.

Both produced messages.

Both were partly truthful.

Julian had cultivated rivalry so neither woman would compare records.

Serena handed Owen to a pediatric nurse.

The baby’s breathing was weak.

Doctors rushed him into treatment.

Then Serena looked at me.

“Lily is with your mother.”

My mother had been dead for fourteen years.

Serena showed me a current photograph.

My mother, Margaret Shaw, holding a two-year-old girl.

Margaret had survived the car crash that supposedly killed her.
