Chapter 2 - THE SECOND BIRTH CERTIFICATE

Audrey took us into a private conference room under hospital security.

Julian remained outside with an officer.

Sienna sat across from me holding the boy—Noah, she finally said his name was.

Ethan stood near the window as if coming too close to the child might make the truth more real.

The second birth certificate named a girl.

Lily Bennett.

Age two.

The third named another boy.

Owen Bennett.

Age six months.

All three listed Clara Bennett as genetic mother.

None had been born to me.

Each had been carried by a different surrogate.

Sienna was only one.

Julian had used my frozen embryos as leverage in a family trust dispute.

The Bennett inheritance transferred controlling shares to the first three grandchildren carrying the founder’s genetic line.

Julian was infertile.

Ethan was not.

Julian had used Ethan’s stored military-deployment sample and my embryos to manufacture heirs.

Then he placed the children with women he controlled.

The plan was simple.

Declare me infertile.

Make me accept divorce.

Marry Sienna.

Present the children as his.

Control the trust.

But Noah’s public birth created a problem.

His hospital blood test excluded Julian.

That was why Audrey reopened the records.

Sienna whispered:

“I thought he was using donor embryos.”

I asked:

“Did you know they were mine?”

She began to answer.

Then stopped.

Her silence told me enough.

She had known at least part of it.

Then hospital security brought in a cardboard box found in Julian’s car.

Inside were three baby bracelets.

Three photographs.

And a handwritten list.

CLARA — EMOTIONAL FAILURE.

SIENNA — PRIMARY MATERNAL SUBSTITUTE.

LILY — PLACED.

NOAH — ACTIVE.

OWEN — MEDICAL HOLD.

Owen was not with a surrogate family.

He was somewhere inside the hospital system.
