Chapter 3 - The Visitor Behind The Door

The footsteps were slow.
Calm.
Confident.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
Not me.
Not Lorraine.
The door opened.
It was my attorney.
The person who had been reviewing my property records.
Daniel’s face changed.
“You called him?”
I didn’t answer.
Because I hadn’t.
My attorney looked at my injury.
Then at the broken plate.
His expression hardened.
“Rachel.”
One word.
But it carried everything.
Concern.
Anger.
Proof.
Lorraine immediately changed.
“Oh, this is ridiculous.”
She became the victim.
She always did.
But my attorney looked at the table.
The folder.
The phone.
Then at Daniel.
“Did you threaten her?”
Silence.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Nobody answered.
Because the truth was already sitting there.
Then my attorney opened his briefcase.
“I brought the preliminary audit.”
Daniel went still.
The audit.
The word alone changed the room.
Because Daniel didn’t fear my accusation.
