Chapter 14 - THE EMPTY BED

Security locked down the floor.

The door opened slowly.

No attacker entered.

A hospital orderly pushed in an empty wheelchair.

On its seat lay two long leg casts.

Fresh.

Labeled REBECCA and RACHEL.

A phone rang beneath them.

Victoria Ashbourne’s recorded voice said:

“One twin walked out of the Walker program.”

A pause.

“The other never did.”

The feed showed Rachel inside a private hospital room.

Both legs in casts.

She had disappeared from Canadian protection that morning.

A current cell was recreating my original assault with her.

They wanted the twins’ stories to merge permanently.

If Rachel accused Caleb’s network using identical memories, every defense could claim contamination.

Federal teams traced the feed to an abandoned rehabilitation center.

Rachel was recovered alive before further injury.

The casts were removable training devices.

But she had been drugged and repeatedly shown footage of my assault.

The network attempted to implant my memories.

Identity replacement had moved from documents to trauma.

Rachel required long-term care.

She asked me to visit.

I went.

She said, “I remember him hitting us.”

“Only me.”

“I know. But my body doesn’t.”

We documented the difference.

Memory could feel true without being historical fact.

Her pain remained real.

The law separated experience from event without dismissing either.

Then the captured operators revealed the cell’s goal.

Create enough Rebecca Walkers that no court could identify the original shareholder.

The company would enter permanent receivership, then be purchased cheaply by a Meridian shell company.

Even after convictions, financial motive remained.

The board blocked the acquisition.

Employees gained controlling shares.

My personal identity no longer determined the company’s survival.

Structure defeated replacement.

Rachel began choosing her own life outside my name.

She kept Rachel Cole.

Not because the system assigned it.

Because she chose to reclaim it.

Then Lily asked to meet both of us.

She looked between our faces.

“Which one is my biological mother?”

“I am,” I said.

Rachel added, “And I am your biological aunt.”

Lily nodded.

No confusion.

Truth stated plainly.

Then the old hospital archive opened one final sealed file.

WALKER DAUGHTERS — GENERATION TWO.

Lily.

Emily.

And a third girl.

Name: Rebecca Walker Jr.

Age ten.

Another child created from my stolen eggs.
