Chapter 4 - ELEANOR WALKER

Eleanor Walker arrived at the federal hospital wearing a cream suit and no visible fear.

She requested to see both sons.

Denied.

She requested to see me.

I agreed through glass.

She called the crash a family misunderstanding.

I showed her the toe tag.

Her expression did not change.

“Caleb panics when women threaten the family.”

“Women?”

Not wife.

Women.

Eleanor had used the system before.

Hayes reopened the disappearance of Nathan’s former fiancée, Laura Bennett.

Laura vanished eight years earlier after accusing Nathan—or Caleb—of assault.

The Walker family said she moved overseas.

No passport record existed.

Eleanor admitted Laura entered a private recovery program under another name.

She called it treatment.

The facility called it guardianship.

Federal agents found Laura alive in a psychiatric residence.

She had spent eight years insisting the brothers switched places during her relationship.

Doctors diagnosed identity delusion.

Her delusion was true.

Laura said Caleb abused her while Nathan apologized.

Then Nathan abused her while Caleb claimed she imagined the difference.

The uncertainty destroyed her credibility.

When she threatened police, Eleanor arranged confinement.

My case repeated the pattern.

Eleanor did not deny it.

She believed Walker women required “stability.”

I asked what made someone a Walker woman.

“Marriage. Blood. Property.”

Ownership hidden beneath family language.

Then Laura identified the man who struck my legs in the hospital.

Neither Caleb nor Nathan.

Their younger brother, Michael Walker.

Another son declared dead at birth.

Michael had been raised privately as the family’s enforcer and medical technician.

Three brothers.

Public husband.

Replacement husband.

Hidden enforcer.

The man who entered my room at 2:13 wore facial prosthetics to resemble Caleb.

That explained the burn scar in the footage.

It was artificial.

The brothers created not only identity confusion.

They manufactured a fourth version.

Michael remained free.

Eleanor claimed she did not know where he was.

Her phone contained a recent message:

MOTHER, STAGE THREE FAILED.

She had been directing him.

Then the federal hospital received a call from a rural clinic.

A woman with both legs in casts had arrived unconscious.

Her identity bracelet read Rebecca Walker.

Another patient was being prepared to replace me.
