Chapter 9 - THE DAUGHTER I DIDN’T KNOW

Medical records showed I underwent emergency surgery ten years earlier after a college car accident.

I believed doctors removed internal scar tissue.

Walker Hospital harvested eggs.

An embryo was created with Caleb’s sperm years before we met.

A surrogate carried the child.

Lily Walker.

The family created a future heir to connect my father’s technology to Walker blood.

Caleb knew Lily existed.

He claimed he never met her.

Eleanor raised her at a private school.

The marriage to me made the genetic arrangement appear legitimate if exposed later.

My body, company, and marriage had been linked before consent.

Federal agents located Lily.

She believed Eleanor was her grandmother and both parents traveled constantly.

She did not know me.

I did not demand contact.

A child advocate explained the history carefully.

Lily asked whether I wanted her.

“I want you safe. We can learn everything else slowly.”

She accepted letters first.

Caleb requested contact.

Denied pending evaluation.

Then Lily’s school reported another student named Emily Walker.

Caleb’s daughter with Anna.

The girls had been raised together as cousins.

Eleanor used each to stabilize the other.

One heir from my line.

One heir from Caleb’s first marriage.

If one resisted, the other inherited.

Children turned into competing legal backups.

The court froze both trusts and appointed independent guardians.

Eleanor lost control.

She responded by releasing my medical history publicly.

Edited records portrayed me as mentally unstable.

I released nothing about Lily or Emily.

Their privacy mattered more than winning headlines.

The company board reviewed the verified evidence privately and kept me in authority through temporary accommodation.

I began rehabilitation.

The casts remained, but doctors expected recovery.

Every small movement became a refusal of the family’s permanent-disability plan.

Then Dr. Reed found a second drug device near my ribs.

It had not been implanted after the crash.

Scar tissue showed it had been there for years.

Caleb had been dosing me throughout the marriage.

Memory gaps.

Fatigue.

Missed meetings.

Moments I blamed on stress.

The device recorded audio too.

My body had carried surveillance inside it.

Surgery removed the implant.

Its final recording contained Eleanor’s voice:

“If Rebecca remembers the child, Stage Four begins.”

I had remembered Lily once before.

And someone erased it.
