Chapter 1 - THE HAND ON MY WOUND

Linda Whitmore’s palm came down on my abdomen before I could move.

The pain was not sharp.

It was blinding.

One second, I was trying to push myself upright in the hospital bed, one trembling hand supporting the fresh incision from my emergency appendix surgery.

The next, my mother-in-law slammed her hand directly onto the bandage.

I screamed.

The heart monitor exploded into a continuous alarm.

My body folded around the drainage tube.

Fresh heat spread beneath the gauze.

Linda leaned over me in the silver dress she had worn to the wedding, her face twisted with rage.

“Stop pretending!”

Hours earlier, I had been standing beside Daniel at the altar.

Then the pain started.

I tried to hide it.

I smiled through the ceremony photographs.

I told everyone it was nerves.

By the time I collapsed near the reception entrance, my appendix had already ruptured.

The ambulance took me away before dinner.

Linda decided I had ruined the wedding deliberately.

She came into my recovery room to say so.

Now blood seeped through my dressing.

Daniel moved faster than I had ever seen him move.

He grabbed his mother’s wrist before she could strike me again and ripped her away from the bed.

She stumbled into the wall.

“Stay away from my wife!”

The words echoed through the room.

Linda stared at him as though he had betrayed her.

“You’re defending this?”

“This is my wife.”

“She destroyed everything.”

“I almost died,” I whispered.

Linda looked at me.

No guilt.

Only disgust.

“You always need the room to stop for you.”

Two nurses rushed in.

One pressed sterile gauze over my incision.

The other hit the emergency alarm.

Hospital security ran down the corridor.

Daniel held my hand.

His fingers shook.

The nurse checked my blood pressure.

“Emily, stay still.”

“I’m trying.”

The drain tube pulled with every breath.

One security officer restrained Linda.

She began shouting that the hospital was overreacting.

Daniel looked at her with a coldness I had never seen before.

“You’ll leave in handcuffs if necessary.”

Then every monitor in the room switched into emergency mode.

A new alert flashed beside my name.

POST-OPERATIVE INTERNAL BLEEDING SUSPECTED.

The surgeon rushed in carrying my CT scan.

He looked at the screen.

Then at me.

His face lost color.

“Something terrible has happened.”

Everyone turned.

Even Linda stopped struggling.

The surgeon enlarged one section of the scan.

A dark shape sat beside the surgical site.

Not blood.

Not normal swelling.

A foreign object.

Metallic.

Embedded deep near my bowel.

Daniel stared.

“What is that?”

The surgeon did not answer immediately.

He looked at the operative report.

Then at the scan again.

“That was not there when we closed her.”

The nurse’s hand froze over my dressing.

Someone had placed something inside my abdomen after surgery.

Linda whispered, “That’s impossible.”

The surgeon looked toward the security camera above the door.

“No,” he said quietly. “It means someone entered this room after the operation.”

Daniel’s grip tightened around mine.

Then Linda looked away.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

The surgeon ordered everyone out except essential staff.

Security began moving Linda toward the hall.

She twisted around and shouted:

“Ask Daniel what he signed!”

My husband stopped breathing.

I looked at him.

“What did you sign?”

He said nothing.

The surgeon turned toward him.

Daniel’s face collapsed.

Before anyone could explain, the hospital television powered on by itself.

A security recording began loading.

Timestamp: forty-two minutes after my surgery.

The image showed Daniel entering my room.

He was not alone.

A woman in a wedding dress followed him.

My wedding dress.

My face hidden beneath the veil.

The loading bar reached ninety-nine percent.

Then froze.

Linda laughed once.

Softly.

Cruelly.
