Chapter 4 - CARTER’S REAL FATHER

Chelsea claimed she did not know who sent the message.

Evelyn asked to see it.

She refused.

That refusal told me the sender mattered.

Nathan’s brass key opened a safe-deposit box at First Atlantic Bank.

Inside were trust records, DNA reports, and Carter’s original birth certificate.

Father: Jason Brooks.

Not Chelsea’s husband, Michael Parker.

Jason—the private investigator paid by Margaret.

Chelsea had built her place in the family around Carter being the legitimate Parker grandson.

But Carter was not biologically or legally Michael’s son.

Michael had signed an acknowledgment of paternity under false information.

Margaret knew.

She protected the lie because Carter gave Chelsea leverage over the trust.

Dany, meanwhile, was Nathan’s biological son and a direct Parker descendant.

The favoritism was not about blood.

It was about control.

When Chelsea saw the certificate, she broke.

Not because of the fraud.

Because she feared losing Carter.

“Do not take my son.”

“I am not trying to.”

“You will use this.”

“I will use the truth against adults who hurt children. Carter is not responsible.”

She stared at me.

“You mean that?”

“Yes.”

Her shoulders lowered slightly.

Then Michael Parker entered the bank conference room.

He had followed us.

He saw the certificate.

The color drained from his face.

Chelsea stood.

“Michael—”

“You told me the test confirmed he was mine.”

“Mom arranged it.”

“You knew?”

Chelsea began crying.

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Being nothing.”

Michael looked at Carter’s photograph attached to the record.

“He is still my son.”

That was the first decent sentence any adult had spoken about the child all day.

Then he looked at Margaret’s transfer record.

“Jason caused Nathan’s crash?”

“We do not know yet,” I said.

Michael’s hands tightened.

“He slept in our guest room after the funeral.”

Chelsea closed her eyes.

Another betrayal.

Then the bank manager brought one more item from the box.

A sealed USB drive.

Label:

BARBECUE CAMERA — ORIGINAL BACKUP.

The family backyard had a security camera installed years earlier.

Margaret told everyone it had stopped working.

Nathan had kept a remote backup.

The footage did not only show Dany reaching for fries.

It showed Margaret speaking with Jason behind the garage before we arrived.

Jason handed her a small envelope.

Margaret said:

“Once Lucy leaves angry, the custody petition begins.”

The barbecue had been staged.
